I just paid $27 for two quarts of Syn3 at the local HD shop. Well, that's not going to happen again. Any Recommendations on the bestest cheaper substitute? I change my oil every 2-3k ... whenever it starts looking real dirty. Thanks John . |

You should get about 5k on syn oil. There are a bunch available from major manufacturers, just be sure that whatever you use meets or exceeds the Syn 3 specs. |

Thanks Itileman, I don't change it at 2-3k because I'm concerned about the oil breaking down ... I don't like the idea of all of those tiny particulates in my oil. . |

I've been using the Mobil 1 full synthetic for a while now, it seems to keep the parts slippery enough. I also like the 455F. flash point too. Think I paid about 6 bucks a quart. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/ Mobil_1_15W-50_.aspx (Message edited by teeps on May 11, 2009) |

Johnboy - you still modeling those winter gloves out there ? I've been pretty satisfied with AMS oil 20/50. Arguably one of, if not, the best available. I get it @ the prefered customer price - about $8 a quart. Just buy a case, and you're good for a year or 2. I believe the Mobil 1 is a reasonable substitute if you don't want to hassle with ordering oil. Look on AMS web site for specs - provides them for most their competitors (including Mobil 1) too. Keep it slippery. j |

You sign up and pay $20 a year. I think it worth in.. a friend and I split it and by 2 cases at a time. Plus I buy a few other items form them so it makes it worth the $20 |

I use the AMSOIL also and like it. Plus I run other oils of theirs in everything including my truck (10qts), air comp., lawnmower, snowblower, etc. So I use up the $20 for prefered in a hurry. $8 a quart for the 20/50 as stated above as I just went and bought some more. I have heard good things on Mobil 1 also but haven't used it in years. |

I use Syn3 but I purchase it when it's on sale at the local dealer for 20% off. |

Unless you consistently run only one oil and then tear your engine down or send an oil sample to a lab I don't see how you can tell that one oil is better than another. I have used Mobil 1 and Syn 3 and without doing either of those measures I can't tell the difference in them except at the register. |

Amsoil 20/50 in the crankcase & primary is what I use, there really is nothing to discuss. If Amsoil was not as good as some other brand they would change it and make it better because they've been making synthetic longer and have the technology to do so. My Buell/Hog dealer actually has Amsoil for those that request it. While you're ordering the 20/50 get their 100:1, yes 100:1! 2 stroke oil and use it in your weed whackers, blowers, etc. doesn't matter if they call for 25:1 or 50:1, just put the same mix in everything, less smoke & very convenient. And most important, it's made in Wisconsin by cheese-heads that care, just like my Buell! |

I had an 07 Vstrom and ran Amsoil syn 10-40 in it and loved it,then I seen some Mobil 1 20-50 syn oil & was a big fan of Mobil 1 ,changed and the shifting was very notchy,so bad that I rode it about 100 miles and couldn't stand it and bought the Amsoil oil again and was back to super smooth shifting...Wow,what a difference!..Now I have my 09X and have Syn 3 in it,would love to run Amsoil, now I see that other guys are using it as well, I'll have to find some...I'm sold on Amsoil..Proven to me in the trans. dept.anyway.. |

I have been using Mobil 20W-50 V-Twin oil in both holes. It shifts well, the clutch has a very linear feel. If you look at the oil test performed by AMSOIL, the mobil oil had practically the same rating. The nice thing about the V-Twin oil is it can be purchased at Walmart for about $8.00 / quart. Walmart keeps the motorcycle oil in the small motorcycle section near the automotive area, not in the normal oil section. It is nice that it can purchased almost anywhere. |

Johnboy - I use AMS in all my vehicles so the $20 is insignificant, and the discount pays for itself in the first case. I also order it for my BMW/Honda/Harley friends. Most everyone I ride with uses the stuff - not because I hyped it - I'm not a dealer, just a user. (DEA hopefully won't be monitoring this website) I ran my 89' 5.0 mustang hard for 250K and never had a head off. Thats what got me to switch. PMing you. j |

Also Auto Zone carries the Mobil 1 oil. Have spent most of first part of this year helping guys find what oil they need. And will continue to do so as long as I am there. We can also oder the K&N Air filter and oil filters for motorcycles. So if guys are in the Edgewood part of Maryland stop in and say hi and ask for Rob. Also I am the assistant store manager so I will do my best to talk bikes and try to help you. |

I've been using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W-50 but just read it's being discontinued as of this month. Being replace with regular (non-extended performance) 15W-50. I've been buying the Extended Performance at Target for years...think I'll run over there tomorrow and try to stockpile what I can. Tipsy |

I've used Mobil 1 15W50 syn in all 4 of our bikes for years. I always buy it in the 5 quart containers they sell at Walmart. Cost for the 5 quart bottle is about 27 bucks. My ULY doesn't seem to use any oil between 3 to 4,000 mile changes. As for the extended performance claims, I used it before they added that verbage to the container and I used it with it. No difference to me, it all works. |

Just make sure the oil you use in the trans is for M/C transmissions because of the clutches. I still use formula+ in my trans. |

I've used the Mobil 1 syn in our 1989 Yamaha YX600 Radian bike and it does engine, clutch and transmission duty with no problem. I use Belray GearSaver lube in the ULY primary/transmission. |

I am currently using Shell Rotella Syn 5W40 in my 12R ($16 per gallon....nice). I am going to use this oil until the motor grenades...or maybe it won't and I'll get many trouble free miles out of it. |

I'll wager that Rotella is great stuff. Maybe your mpg will be better since it is 40 weight instead of 50 weight. Is it better? |

EG1997, I don't tour on the 12R, so I haven't paid attention, but I agree it's probably a good oil. Somebody here a few years ago did a bunch of back-to-back used oil analyses with rotella in his Uly. All reports came back A-OK if I remember correctly. When the weather cools down, I'll use it in my Uly and then I'll have a better idea about fuel mileage increases. I'm more interested to see if it results in better cooling and by default, less fan running. |

Mystik JT-8 semi-synth in either 15w-40 in spring and 15w-50 in summer and comes in 2 gal jug for 20$. The Buell loves it. Mystik can be had at 'farm n' fleet' stores. Also rotella 5w-40 works nicely in spring. Chas |

Advanced Auto frequently offers "Oil Change Specials" last month they had 5 quarts of Castrol Syn Tech and a K&N filter for $25. They didn't have the 20w50 or the filter size in stock, but they ordered it and I had it in a week and gave me the deal. 25 bucks for two full synthetic oil changes! That filter is usually $15 alone and the oil usually sells for $7 per quart. That is a bargain, and covers me the entire season. (Message edited by lastcyclone on May 13, 2009) |

Whatever happened to the speculation several years back that some of the oils used in the primary (06) Uly had some chemicals in them that dissolved the shielding on the windings in the stator? I am not attempting to start a rumor, I was just wondering whatever happened with that story. When it first came out I went with Formula+ for my primary. |

Pso, that was Mobil 1 75W90 Gear Oil, not any of the motor oils. Very touchy subject. |
