Apparently whales and fish have evolved saw toothed leading and trailing edges on their flippers for more efficient winging through the water. Probably would work on the cooling fan blades. I just don't think it has enough umph to do the job we would like to get it for. 1.32 watts. .11Amps at 12V. Nope just won' do it. | ||

Its a computer fan, it does not have the CFM of air movement nor the RPM needed to cool the rear jug. Not to mention its smaller than the XB fan, and won't like the weather. | ||

Shows that someone is working on it though. Maybe the good folks at Buell will see this and show it to their supplier. You never know froggy, you could be famous man. | ||

Somebody could always take a spare legitimate XB fan and file some notches in the blades and see what affect it has on the noise. | ||

That oxide shows the trailing edge (I think anyway) showing notches. I think it needs to be done to the leading edge. The whale has notched leading and notched trailing. Very interesting to say the least. Wouldn't it be great if you couldn't even tell it was on and it moved even greater volumes of air. It would even process more flow when the power was off. | ||

Froggy- maybe we could find a computer fan with sawtooth blades of the same diameter and just swap the fan blade assembly, keeping the same Buell housing and motor. | ||

Interesting- the RPM on the fan in the pic above is 1300; the XB fan spins around 6500 RPM according to an analysis made by Husky a couple of years ago: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=142838&post=752079#POST752079 No wonder it's loud. | ||

Buell Fan:  Fish Fan: The fan with the cutouts on the blades also appears to have a much more thought out blade design. The Buell fan blades are basically curved triangles. I doubt you can mod the Buell fan blades to be much quieter. I suspect you could design a replacement set of blades that would fit in the Buell housing. I think the setup costs for making plastic parts is high. Anyone have one of those 3-D fabrication machines? | ||

I would be skeptical of reducing the noise from these saw tooth cuts in the leading edge of the blades. In the aviation industry they are always trying to quiet the engines. There are several designs throughout the engine with it's cowlings/exhaust sections. For the fan blades they manufacture in a curvature of the leading edge. Making it look more like a long-badly modified "S" shape and then giving the blade a little twist here and a little twist there. I don't think the fan manufacturers would go for all that R&D processe(s) for our XB fan's. I wish they would though. I think we are stuck with our loud conversation starter. | ||

If you spin that "fish" fan at 6500 RPM it will probably grenade. Heck, I've seen a computer fan turn to shrapnel when blowing the dust out of a PC with an air hose. There is a reason why the blades on the Uly fan are short and stout. |
