I haven't researched this sort of thing in a long time, but back in the day there was an aftermarket company that specialized in control cables and they had a beautiful one that was teflon lined, smooth, never needed lubrication, and had a lifetime warranty. I forget the company's name right now, but they were the ticket back in the early 80's There must be an equivalent out there now.

I think you can buy all the cool gear that is used to apply the ends to the steel cable as well as a roll of bulk cable.
There used to be a little shop near my house that would make you any random cable you wanted cheaper than factory.

I got the impression that the kit and everything was pretty cheap.

Ya know, I think it was Barnett. I should have known as Barnett is such a big name in clutches. It was a long time ago though. In any case, in those days, they made a straight out replacement cable for the Norton Commando so I wonder if they do the same for Buell XB's. I think I will look into it. It would be THE replacement cable to have on the road when (if) the OEM cable breaks.

From what I gather here cables break at the handlebar lever end, due to junk and dry grease in there preventing the end ferrule from rotating in the lever recess.

Clean out the lever and grease well, maybe install something like this:

Honda Clutch Lever Boot

My cable never gets dirty in there any more.
