In yet another way that High Country H-D/Buell in Frederick, Colorado (BWB sponsor) tries to go beyond the average Buell dealership by providing exceptional service, we think we have figured out a way to possibly have a couple Ulysses, a XB12X and a XB12XT, and maybe a Blast and/or a Lightning, available for rent in our High Country H-D/Buell rental fleet this year.

Not a slam-dunk, details remain, but it is an opportunity that I think time has come for providing. Stay tuned and if we are successful, please tell your flat-lander friends that have always wanted to ride the Rockies on a Buell. Good utilization on these models and we'll do it again next year. Plus this should provide some good value used Buells for us to offer for sale.

You better have a few in stock for immediate purchase after the bike comes back.

We've got an 09 XT in our rental fleet here in Frederick MD.

First guy who rented it came back 2 days later and bought one : )

That is a super brilliant sales idea. If I had taken a brief test ride before I bought my Uly I dunno if I would have gone through with it. It seemed pretty strange at first. All my recent riding experience was on a sedate and refined '82 BMW R100RT. The Uly seemed like some kind of snorting uppity wild beast in comparison. It was pretty shocking.

Of course once I got used to it I came to realize that the Uly was an awesome beast and as perfect a bike for my needs as I was gonna find, but I'm not sure that would have sunk in on a short test ride.

Hahah test rides are for the weak. I was a sucker the moment I discovered one at the international motorcycle show. : )

The CR did the same thing to me, but I needed to ride it a few times just to tease myself while I save up : )

That is an excellent idea. I'm very leary of my next bike purchase because after five of the suckers I'm still not satisfied and I've grown weary of trading. With a rental I could spend an entire day on a bike and know for certain what I liked and disliked.

If a demo'ing or rental dealer was smart he would set the ULY up with good wind protection and heat abatement so as not to turn off prospective ULY buyers. When I got mine back in late 05', I had a hard time enjoying the bike until I finally got the windshield setup just right and that took a bit of time. Then I worked the heat problem until I solved that. It would seem to me that ULY's would sell themselves better if they were pre-setup with the Strada brackets and under the seat heat shields. I personally don't have the Strada's but it seems that many of you like them. For the costs, the dealers would be way ahead in speed of sales. Actually if Buell really took heed of our concerns they'd have these nick picking things taken care of right from the factory instead of us buyers having to rig them after the sale. And Buell should take the time to add a 6th gear and then spread them out so folks don't have to bastardize by changing primary ratios. My 2 bucks worth.

EG, your suggestions are good, but there are problems with each suggestion. Wind protection is subjective and depends on many factors including the riders height, how he sits on the bike, jackets, tank bags, and a dozen other small things all can make a huge difference. It is not possible to setup a bike that will be perfect for a new rider, as there is a little bit of trail and error involved. It would be cool if the bikes had something similar to the Strada bracket right from the factory.

Heat is also subjective, I almost never experience it, and have over 40k miles under my belt over many XB models. If I move my leg a bit on a hot day I might be able to feel it. Again, too many factors for it, and the majority of riders do not complain about it.

6th gear would be cool, but I have heard several times that they can't make the bike pass some EPA tests with a 6th gear. They tend to be picky over the stupidest things, especially noise coming from the engine.

Froggy,
The old EPA won't let me do it excuse. How is it that Harley big twins and every sportbike other than Buell have 6 speed transmissions? My reply to that "Pull it out and dust it off excuse" would be "Buell, show me that prototype 6 speed Buell that failed the EPA test".

You should refund the price of rental toward the purchase of a new bike. I think that would make it all the more attractive for potential buyers to come and see you.

EG,
How tall are you? I'm 6'4" and the stock windshield and seat on my '07 work great for me. My noggin is up in the clean air up above the blast which hits me in the upper chest.

Barefoot at 6 foot. I like riding with a 1/2 helmet and that is much of the wind noise problem in my case. Also I had a back operation 28 years ago and having the wind push me down into the seat is hard on my tricky lower back. P.S. Never have a back operation no matter what because it will never be worth a crapola after that.
