Tried to use search but it isnt working so my questions are as follows:

Does anyone have a RHS scoop on their Uly? Does it work? Was it easy to fit? Which one did you get? Would you fit one again?

Thanks for any info.....

If you read the thread he claims to have searched, or he was a lazy bastard and just lied. : )

People with right side scoops are nut jobs, give me a button to make the fan run more : )

Bottom line. There are conditions where the right side scoop can help the engine run cooler, BUT there are conditions where the right side scoop exacerbates heat build up.

A summary of a Buell engineer's thoughts on the subject.

Right side scoops rule!!! I would have them on all of my XB's but for some reason they seem to be selling for around $250.00 and that would put me in the poor house. As for the auxilliary fan on switch...anyone without one is effing nuts!

Removed mine for winter last nite!,bloody bike just won't warm up on the 15km run to work of a morning, did a run with it this morning and it was better for sure, come summer time it'll go right back on,but for now it's in the shed.

Here is the way I see it. Weekend here was beautiful. Mid 70s, perfect riding weather. 2 Up with both bags ran 138 kms at 140 150 kph. I have an oil temp gauge and low and behold it never got above 195F. Do I think a person needs an extra scoop. Not. But hey it's your $250. A person wonders where they get the pricing for this stuff.

Hailwood,

You asked several questions without getting very good answers.

Does anyone have a RHS scoop on their Uly?
Many of us do.

Does it work?
Yes it does, if you define working as keeping that wonderful fan quiet. Prior to the scoop, once my fan turned on it would not turn off until the engine was turned off for 60 seconds +/-. With the scoop the fan will turn on at shut down if the air temp is above ~60F. The fan will also turn on if I am running slow on gravel roads, but once back on the highway the fan turns off.

I suspect that the wonderful fan actually impedes air flow when it is on and the Uly is moving at highway speeds.

If is so great, why doesn’t the factory add one then (my question)?
I found the answer posted on this forum by one of the Anonymous boys: Not "pope like" in any way, but also not stupid, greedy or any of the other coments tossed out about us. For example, the large right side scoop screws up the way the calibration works to meet emissions, and that is a big issue for us OE. You can say we are lying or stupid again, but the fact is we tested these and found we could not use them and still meet emissions. If it could deliver what we need of course we would put it on; we already pay for a plastic piece there. Does this sound complex and out there? Well, live in our world and you will find out how difficult and complex it really is.

Was it easy to fit?
It was extremely easy to fit. All the holes lined up. No beating to shape or filing to fit required.

Which one did you get?
The cheaper one that American Sports Bike sells, not the carbon fiber one.

Would you fit one again?
If I bought another Uly, I would transfer my current one to the new bike before driving the bike home. Screw that fan. I am thinking about removing it completely.

BTW, my '07 bike is out of warranty now.

At the swingarm, does the RHScoop lower the oil temp or increase it? If the oil temp is higher with a RHS then it probably isn't doing the engine any favors.

Electraglider,

I don't understand your concern.

The oil temperature measured anywhere on the bike will show a modest decrease if it shows any change at all. The only change with the scoop is an increase of cool air to the rear head. The rest of the air flow to the bike remains the same.

We know that the rear head shows a decrease in temperature because the thermocouple buried in the head doesn't see a temperature high enough for the computer to turn on the fan as often as it would have without the scoop.

Od cleaver,
If it was as simple as that then I'd bet Buell would have installed the RHScoop as original equipment.
You claim, "We know that the rear head shows a decrease in temperature because the thermocouple buried in the head doesn't see a temperature high enough for the computer to turn on the fan as often as it would have without the scoop."

Actually the only thing that proves is that the RHS cools the sensor location better but I've read that Buell engineers claim the rear jug overall gets hotter because the RHScoop impedes the LHScoop's designed air flow.

All I'm saying is that you should beware "knowing" something without the hard oil temperature data to back it up. You may be right but you may be wrong.

My fan absolutely ran less but when I got in the drive it seemed the engine was hotter. No empirical data. I just took it off and the fan ran more but when I got in the garage the engine seemed cooler. I also noticed that effect was different depending on how windy the day was and which direction the wind was hitting the bike the most on the trip home. Like I said just me feeling when arriving in the garage. I did not do any temp studies to prove or disprove it. My perception of the heat was enough for me.

It's pretty simple. LHS directs air from the left side, into the engine, through the engine bay, and out the back.

If you add a RHS, you now have competing airflow - air from the left now hits air from the right on its way in, and neither scoop can flow air properly across the *entire* engine - it stalls out where the LH and RH airflows hit each other. There may be more air across the fan / head temp sensor...but not the *whole* engine.

Look at the rest of a Buell. The engineers definitely do things for a reason....and looking at the bikes, and based on the couple of factory folks I've met...they're usually right.

If you could provide an aerodynamic wind flow test of that proposition, I'd believe it. I'd remain skeptical otherwise.

If I remember the conversation. It is true that the Rss increases a flow, but it decreases the Airs Speed in vital areas, resulting in a hotter running engine at lower speeds. Low speed cruising and such.

Well since I don't do that, I will enjoy the lower temps my RSS provides at highway/rural road speeds.

This helped control the heat generated on my bike. I route the fan air under my seat as much as possible. No ECM or Battery problems yet and my bike is Oct 05 build. No hot ass syndrome either. I still have the original fan and over 17,000 miles. Now I suppose it will probably quit.

Skinstains what addy did you want mate,I'm in NSW Australia, rode the bike today in heavy rain and the engine was warm, not hot(this is my feeling only),but for winter I will be keeping the Rss off for the time being,I feel most of us put it on purely for cosmetic reasons, will I put it back on come summer time.....yes!
During summer we will endevour to put the laptops onto the bike and monitor rear cylinder temps with and without scoops.

Od_cleaver,

Please could you quantify or explain this:

I found the answer posted on this forum by one of the Anonymous boys: Not "pope like" in any way, but also not stupid, greedy or any of the other coments tossed out about us. For example, the large right side scoop screws up the way the calibration works to meet emissions, and that is a big issue for us OE. I don't quite understand how the addition of a RSS can impede or alter the exhaust emmissions?

I am going to try the RSS. I will also try to run a "vent" hidden in the RSS, providing fresh air to the inside of the underseat tray. Don't know how yet, but this cooked buttocks has got to stop. NUTS

NUTS, I don't know how you could do that either with a RSS, mine stops way short of getting anywhere near the seat pan.

I would try closing off the space between the fan exit/upper rear shock and the ECM/brake reservoir/battery/seat pan area. I never understood how the bike was engineered to allow so much heat to stagnate under the seat with those components in there.

But hey I'm no engineer, I've got a RSS.

I might be able to use a piece of heater hose(hidden in the RSS or somewhere else for that matter) and be able to drill through the underseat tray. I will be taping the area you mention as EG'97 has done. Tape, Odies Blanket, RSS, forced air under the seat, whatever it takes. NUTS

I know we want cool air for combustion but what about drawing some of the air into the airbox from under the seat? Perhaps some vents under the tail to allow cooler air to be drawn in? Just thinking out loud.

Longdog,

That fragment of the post was made by "Anonymous". It is my understanding that the only people given the "Anonymous" handle are Buell engineers. The post was made 10/3/07 and should be here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/311328.html?1191535514

Assuming what I said above is true, I made the guess that the RSS slows down the rate that the engine (rear cylinder) warms up. Engines pollute more during warm up than when they are hot. Or, it could be that at the low end of the EPA's test temperature window the RSS keeps the engine (rear cylinder) too cool. Buell also uses one O2 sensor in the rear exhaust. This added scoop probably just complicates the fuel air balance between the two cylinders.

Now I think that I will stop my guessing here. I don’t want to give Johnny, Scooter and the rest of the kids too much fun.
