If you have, please tell us:
1) The mileage when you did this
2) The symptoms you had that let you know it was the filter and not say....gummed up injectors?

For any mechanically inclined viewers of this post...maybe you can tell the rest of the group how the symptoms of these two problems usually manifest themselves differently? Or are they "feel" identical to the rider?

Thanks for the post, Okc99.
I was recently asked about the fuel filter on the Uly and my response was Idunno.

I double-checked the maintenance schedule and I didn't see it anywhere.
Has anyone changed it as a maintenance item?

I know there have been recent postings about wiring on the fuel pump.
Did those of you who removed the fuel pump take the opportunity to replace the fuel filter?

Just removed the pump this past week. I did not replace the filter.
It looks like it would be no problem to change...getting a new one on the other hand .

The fuel filter part # is P0101.02A8 (08 parts manual).

I'll try to offer some insight into the thoughts of the fuel filter. First, there are actually two filters. The first is a mesh fiber cloth type material on the inlet side of the pump that will keep any crud from entering the pump. the outlet side of the pump then feeds a regulator bypass valve and the bypassed fuel is directed back to wash through the inlet mesh filter material to flush any stuck crud from the outside of the material. The remaining pressurized fuel that is not bypassed is directed through a standard can-type filter before exiting through the banjo fitting to the fuel line going to the fuel-rail of the throttle body.

I honestly doubt you have a clogged fuel filter based on it's design. There would have to be very serious amounts of crud in the tank before any clogging would occur and since the tank and pump housing are aluminum there is no problem with rust like there is with standard motorcycle tanks.

There is however a known problem with wire chaffing at the pump which causes a couple different symptoms depending on which wire gets chaffed. Supposedly this has been resolved but wasn't recalled. Failures get warranty replacement but the dealer has to be able to determine actual failure and this can be difficult because of the intermittent nature of the failures.

Luckily for us Uly owners the pump can be taken out fairly easily by disconnecting one end of the rear shock and raising the bike to get enough room to remove the pump assembly. You need to remove the left footpeg bracket also.

Other non Uly XBs have to have the rear swingarm removed to get the pump out....

We can easily fix the chaffing issue ourselves and others have posted how they have done it.

I hope this helps.
