How's the saying go? If It's Too Loud, You're Too Old? Well, today I removed the Drummer and reinstalled my stock exhaust. The Drummer sounds fantastic but for the long trips I like to do, the noise has become fatiguing. I'd forgotten how much quieter the stock exhaust is! I rode home w/o ear plugs from NJ this evening (where I was wrenching) to reacquaint my ears to the sounds of the Uly...I could hear the valve train, the wind, the shifter...it's a strange sensation. But I'm leaving NYC for FL tomorrow, so I'm sure I'll get used to it fairly quickly. It'll be nice listening to the iPod without the Drummer noise in the background too. Also installed translucent blue plastics today and Precision Engineering Billet footpegs to replace the Touratech pegs. The PE pegs are SO much better. If the 2" drop pegs had been available when I bought them back in December, I would have gotten those instead. Tipsy | ||

Riding with out ear plugs for 15 minutes at 70 mph can cause permanent hearing loss. Keep the Drummer and wear ear plugs.  | ||

Naw, know exactly where you're coming from. I toyed with the idea of an aftermarket can but there are times it's nice to putt around w/o drawing too much attention or scaring off every bit of wildlife w/in 10 square miles. Most times I love to hear a tweaked Vtwin with a free flowing exhaust, the brap of a mean 2 smoker or growl of an off road four banger..........then there are times when I'm cooling my heels in hottub our back that I'd just as soon not. Not having to wear ear plugs, being able to hear the "little" noises of my bike and listen to tunes is better for me. IMHO Erik got it right with the valve thingy, relatively quiet putting and mean sounding when the Uly means business. I guess the open setting on the valve could be a bit more "open", think I'll leave mine stock for now. Must be getting old too........ .........NOT.  | ||

If it's a one way trip, it's because I've either won the lottery or something really bad has happened! Incidentally, the plastics were sitting in a box in my apartment for months. I hadn't unwrapped them until today. I'm a little disappointed that the airbox cover was sort of "crazed" right out of the box. It almost looks as if it had been scuffed with Scotch-Brite. I know it'll get beat up over time, so I'll live with it but for the money, it should look a little nicer out of the box. Also, one of the Buell decals isn't adhering very well.
Thanks...I always wear ear plugs. I just wanted to listen to the bike with the stock exhaust on the ride home. Besides, my hearing has already been degraded from several thousand hours piloting turbo-prop aircraft Tipsy | ||

Loud pipes don't save lives. That ••••••• was going to pull over anyway! And, your not somebody special, your just a conceded jerk that dosen't care about other peoples rights. Just like the a-holes with the car stereos that make peoples walls shake. Nothing like living next to a jerk who leaves the house every morning a 6 am on his bike with straight-shots, and you don't need to get up until 7!!! Wow. Breathe, dude. Tipsy - you're going thru the exact set of events that I foresaw when I bought my used Drummer...and kept my stock can. If I ride to Homecoming, it'll probably be on the stock pipe just for the drone. Buzzing around town, I like the sound, but for a long highway haul I think it'd get to be too much. | ||

I saw a bumper sticker once. It said: "If loud pipes save lives, imagine what learning to ride can do!" Oh and I can totally relate to the d-bag with the straight pipes rolling in on a Sunday night around 11pm. Not sure where the Arabs and Jews fit in though. | ||

Good rant. I found that wiring the active muffler valve open made the bike louder than i desired even though I did like the sound. We all like the sound and there is a time and a place for it. The more we disturb our neighbors, the more they will desire to infringe upon our desires. I prefer stealth instead of drawing attention to myself. Especially when I'm ripping through someone's podunk town. | ||

i am drawn to the loudness like a fly to dog sh**. my perfect muffler would cause ripples in vinyl siding as i rode past a house. i dont care what my neighbors think, when they start paying my bills i will consider their opinions. | ||

Tipsy... LOL. Great post. It's the Drummer's fault. In all seriousness, reading this post I'm glad I decided to get the Buell Race pipe for my XT. Some sound but I don't think it's bad at all on the highway. No drone. | ||

LOL that sounded bad didnt it? im not a butthole to my neighbors, they are all old and i respect some of them. i make up for my noise by helping them fix their old as dirt lawn mowers and i snowblow their driveways in the winter. they still nock on my door when they need a hand. | ||

At the risk of starting a pissing contest, I believe the "don't give a sh*t" attitude towards disturbing the peace is a juvenile one. I whole-heartedly believe in personal liberty so long as it does not affect others. That's really what it's all about. A glib attitude towards another's right to not be disturbed by your loud *ss pipes is self-centered, self-absorbed and benefits no one in society. Like I stated before, a time and place for everything. Take it to the track. Get your noise jollies there, but be civil on the roads, i.e., keep the DB level within the limits of the law. Good man! I like the sound of a well-tuned V-twin (my Aprilia and Ducati, for example) as well as anyone, but... ...the Uly just seems like a bike that oughta be quiet. no contest here, everybodys got their own way of thinking. if they didnt, boards like this would be empty. people get annoyed way too fast these days, they are quick to point an angry finger at somone else but slow to turn it around at themselves. to me, the most annoying sounds in the world are lawn mowers, leaf blowers ,central air units and barking dogs.all of which have disturbed me while tryin to watch my sat morning cartoons, but im no finger pointer, live n let live is how i roll. | ||

I must be old as well (30) and I have left the Uly exhaust stock. I love the sound, but my wife doesn't and on long rides, the drone of the muffler isn't the best. Now on my track bike and dirt bikes, those are as far from stock as possible...but again, I'm not riding for 700+ miles in a day. | ||

I'd like it if my ULY was electric motor quiet. I always have the horn if I need to make noise. Neighbor across the street and 2 houses to the east has a loud dyna and he woke me up this morning just idling. Not necessary. Why pis.s neighbors off because as we all know, "Paybacks a beyatch". | ||

If that were my neighborhood, I'd probably be in jail right now... btw - it's not about thinking this way or that, it's about respecting others. Yeah, barking dogs, lawnmowers, etc., I'm with you. Seems like every time we eat a meal out on the deck, someone starts up their lawn mower. However, that's a far cry from intentionally making your vehicle as loud as possible so as to attract attention to one's self. The world is getting smaller every year. We all gotta get along. | ||

Hey Dr. Greg, you suppose if you had loud pipes that deer would have been scared off rather than sucked into running in front of you?  I proudly wear my "Loud Fans Save Lives" shirt from Crusty and co. My Uly pipe will stay stock because of the long trips and I did the race pipe on my City-X for a year or so, don't need to go back to that(great sound though). Old.....mebby so.....or likely.....Ok, ya got me! | ||

In my experiences with loud pipes (either me riding or viewing/listen from the side of the road), I've found it has a more negative effect on people overall. Like it has been said in above posts, I side with the view of a more stealthy approach. I've found that my stock Uly can get the attention of others; I was passing a cage and opened it up and got a startled reaction.  | ||

Loud pipes reduce performance ..... that's right .... .throw rocks at me. Think about it. If you are riding for performance you should keep you bike in the effective power band. If you have loud/open pipes you usually ride at a lower RPM to avoid cops and maintain you own sanity. Therefore you are usually riding outside of the effective power band. I usually keep my Uly "spooled" and ride at 4000-5000 RPM. Riding an open pipe at that RPM for extended would wear you out. My friends with their aftermarket cans never seem to ride "on the pipe". Of course at the track the opposite would be true. But again my friends with the superbikes never go to the track. Thoughts? | ||
