While not recommended highly, I plan to take the Uly on more dirt than road soon. However, I didn't want to keep the existing HB bags on. I thought about metal bags, but didn't want those, then I saw the Gobi bags from HB. I realize that I'm not the first to put Gobi's on the Uly, but I haven't seen too many, so here are some pictures with both the Outdoorsman topcase and Gobi bags:      The only problem is the passenger pegs won't fold up all the way since the gobi bags are in the way. Maybe some of those nifty relocation pegs or adapters would work.  Wayne | ||

From the HB site: A volume of 37 litres and could resist a weight of 100 Kg. The Gobi bags made of a coloured shock-resistant artificial material is extremely robust, water-proof and it absorbs any shock without any consequences for your journey. It combines the look of an aluminium-made bag and the advantages of a bag made of artificial material. The outer as well as the inner panels of the shell are connected and offer a volume of 3,5 litres for liquids – something special for etreme tours. -=-=-=- They make a water spout (I didn't order that), which allows you to put water in between the inner and outer wall so you have water available for your journey. Look'n good. I like the Gobi's on the Uly and wish they were stock items on the XT. The way I pack to travel is a lot different than your set up and I went with the Ortlieb Dry Bags. With all that luggage room, you must be planning to bring the family along.  | ||

Are those side bags mounted on the stock rack? That is some serious capacity. Yes, they mount on the stock rack. While they look bigger, they really aren't. The Journey sidecases (what the Buell cases are) fit 42 litres. The Gobi bags are only 37 litres. However, they have an inner and outer wall, this is what makes them seem so large. The plastic is suppose to be ultra durable... the idea is when you drop the bike, the bags don't crack and break, like the journey bags would. Oh, and Itileman, I have taken the whole family on long trips, and we just might do it again in June. In December, my wife took her bike (the R1150R BMW seen in the background) and I took my R1150RT with my daughter on-board and we rode at Christmas from Texas to Florida to go to Disney for the holidays. Try packing your stuff along with two females for 10 days in four sidebags and two topcases, it's tough! Wayne | ||

A volume of 37 litres and could resist a weight of 100 Kg. So you could exceed the gross vehicle weight rating of the bike just by filling those too bags! Add the rider and passenger and some goodies in that top case and you could have a 1200 pound uly waddling down the road lol they do look good  (Message edited by petereid on April 22, 2009) | ||

Having done lots of test riding I assure you that if you load the bike beyond GVR you'll never made it to the "waddling" stage. If you want to get a flavor, in a form that's somewhat mild and recoverable, try putting 20# in a tank bag and going about 70MPH. Airplanes and motorcycles both are terribly unforgiving of weight and balance violations. | ||

Does anyone have the dimensions of the Outdoorsman top case? Is it wider than the Journey? Will it fit on the Journey rack? My old laptop used to fit in the Journey top case, but my new laptop is a bit too wide. | ||

From the HB site: The Outdoorsman (Junior 45) is: 38x53x26 in cm. If you look at my photos, you'll see that it fits correctly on the standard mounting rack. It is wider. Two full face helmets fit in the topcase. Wayne | ||

I would suspect it's an '07 rack, I really don't know, I simply purchased the bags as part of the deal when I bought the bike. -- Thanks for the compliment, although I really haven't done too much to it except change out the bags and add some protective stuff. The photo don't really show the touratech stuff very well, but I've got most of the protective touratech guards on my bike. Court: As far as I know, you have to buy the bags as a set. I ordered the bags from my local BMW shop which is also a HB dealer. The Gobi bags must be popular the US distributor was getting in ten sets, and only two weren't already spoken for, I was able to grab one of those two. Wayne | ||

Here is mine with the Gobi bags. They do not have the capacity of the stock bags. A full face helmet will not fit in the top case. I dropped it once off road and put a hole in the outer shell. My main reason for getting these is I carry my photo equipment around with me and I felt the double wall bag was better in case of a fall. I also like top loading bags better than the clamshell bags.  Would have gotten the black but they did not have those at the time. | ||

I looked at the link that Court put up. I think it's significant that the price is double for items that Buell sells. The Journey latches are $40.00+, the Bag liners are $70.00 ea. etc. I keep getting reminders why I like Buells so much for so many different reasons. | ||

They didn't. There is two different side racks, one that comes with the Journey cases and one that comes with the Outdoorsman cases. The Journey ones are more forward and the latches are on backwards. The Outdoorsman racks are further back, latch on by the rear, and requires a turn signal relocation thats part of the kit. | ||

Choyashi: I would ask how many times you crashed... I'm really hoping not to drop the bike more than a dozen times on my trip, but you never know, and honestly I didn't want to test the limits of the journey bags. Ullygan: The answer is no. These fit directly into the mounts from Buell. You can't adjust them. I did have my daughter sit on the bike last night and she said they didn't interfere with her. I left them on, and I took her to school today and she didn't seem to have any issues with where they were located. I don't know.. maybe some of those drop-down pegs might give you some additional room. Wayne | ||

the pelicans will support the weight of the bike, or a small toyota; and in the event of a tip over they are the best frame protector out there. DAMHIK  Leave the family behind, it aint really a vacation if you aint escapin... but then again I aint married. shame I cant put the tap on them | ||

Dropping the bike won't crack the Journey cases! ... Is not true every time. I got caught in the snow and foolishly tried to ride home. Barely made it out of the lot when did a slow spin and easy laydown. Punched a hole through the back of the case. It was really cold, which didn't help, but they will crack. Fixed mine with a steel electrical box cover and some pop rivets. | ||

All 3 of my Journey cases are severely damaged, the locks even broke on two of them and the bags got yanked off at 60 mph. No cracks, still waterproof. |
