Well I never really felt the Uly was that great for me as far as wind is concerned at highway speeds. I am 6'6" and the bike itself fits me perfect but I always felt like it was way too unstable at speed. I tried different wind screen configurations and found that no screen at all was the best option for me. I am pleased to announce that I have completely solved all of this. Yesterday I purchased a Shoei RF1000 and did over 300 miles on the highway ranging from 65-80mph with no wind screen. Problem solved, case closed. It was my old helmet causing the problem. I can't believe the difference a helmet can make. I could go on and on about how much of a completely different feel the bike has on the highway now. I still can't believe it.

Ulyscol, give us a bit more detail. It sounds like a majority of the percieved instability must have been noise/buffeting. I say this because the cross section of a helmet could not "catch" or create that much drag from the side. It could from front/back but not right/left. Arguably it could from a diagonal, e.g. if their is a headwind at a 45degree angle and you speed into it, it would "feel" like you're being pushed to the side I suppose.

I think buffeting was the exact cause of me perceiving the bike to be unstable. The buffeting caused by my old helmet was being translated through the bike. I never gave it a second thought until I hopped on the highway with the new helmet. I just got back from riding today and my second impression... it was the helmet!

Your bodies sense of equilibrium comes from your head so it would make sense that an unstable helmet would make you perceive an unstable condition. Glad you like the bike again.

I had an HJC full face modular (flip up) and I liked the feeling of opening my face in the hot Texas summer, but the cost was the fatigue of the extra weight. If you glanced behind you 3 times on a road trip the drag of turning your head back to the road was enough to make you feel sore that evening in the hotel. Neck muscles are rarely tested until forced to deal with 60mph+ winds. I now have a Shoei X11 that is not as versatile must TONS lighter and thus much better at staving off neck fatigue.

Ulyscol,
Funny that you should write about this....the exact same thing happened to me this week! I'm 6'3" and have been searching for a solution to wind buffeting. I got my new Shoei RF-1000 on Wednesday and noticed a HUGE difference from my old HJC especially at 65+ mph. What a fantastic helmet. What color did you get? I picked up the Camino TC-6 scheme.

Ulycruise,
I Think AGV makes the new Buell Helmets. I know for sure that one of the Buell models is actually the AGV Steath.

Hangontight,
I picked up the Caster TC-1 in red/black. I still can not believe the difference a helmet can make.

You are right on the money on this. I had an old HJC and I always hated long trips on the highway going 65+. I always thought it was lack of wind protection. I upgraded to a Scorpion EXO-1000 and the difference was HUGE. Now I tend to speed a little. Do you think Johnny Law will let it slide if I tell him I'm just not used to my helmet?

Another thing to remember is to stay loose on the bars. They are wide bars and the bike is very responsive to inputs. My jacket arms tend to be a bit flappy in the wind and if I stiff-arm the bars the bike is all over the road...stay loose!

I used to have a slightly loose jacket. It would pull up a bit and form to the wind and cause wind buffeting to my head. For a long time I thought it was the helmet as I couldn't see or feel a problem with the jacket itself. Different jacket solved the problem.
