I read it 10 years ago or so,I am going to the library to get it again.

He adjusts the valves on one side then does a spin or something to get to the other side.

What is Quality?

I think most of us can relate to this book.

Read it 40+ yrs ago, when 1st released in paperback - Great read - Had a Hawk then & had the same problem w/ the chain tensioners he did. - When I became responsible for Q/A would ask the Techs to read it (then they usually stared @ me).
Gave my copy to my son (along w/ my King James Bible) when he went to sea. - Want another copy but used book store can't keep paperbacks in.
Sad epilog - will let you find it on your own.

As good as the book is, I find it telling that the book he took with him was Walden. It is always in my case when I travel. It is truly a book that you can read again and again and always find something new, and something timely.

I loaded an MP3 version into my iPod 2 years ago and listened to it on my ride to and from Deal's Gap (11 hours each way). It's a great book.

I enjoyed it too, last summer, but more for the narrative of his trip, his relationship with his son, and the people he encountered. I guess I'm not so much into the "zen" then. I had the updated version with the very sad afterword in it, which was a real downer.

There are a lot of good motorcycle books out there. Neil Peart's, though wordy, certainly "get it". I also like magazine columnist compilations like "101 Road Tales" and "Leanings" - you can read a couple installments in about 10 minutes before hitting the sack or while waiting for the waitress to bring the next course.

Anyone know of any other good motorcycle fiction or longer stories?

The audiobook I had came with the afterword. I had trouble seeing the road for a few moments.....

Fellas, I also read it "back it in the day" and own the book. So I recently thought "hey, now that I'm so much older and wiser it oughta be a great re-read."

Well, not so much. The "motorcycle maintenance" musings WERE very interesting, but the middle part of the book really started to drag. I didn't finish it...

My wife bought it for me a number of years ago in soft cover. I need to read it. I do remember reading it probably over 30 years ago.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen_and_the_Art_of_Mo torcycle_Maintenance

That's what I'm saying, Dr. Greg...there were lots of good parts, until the "zen parts" came up.

@hooper: I recently finished "Lois on the Loose." I highly recommend. You can read the book reviews here: http://www.amazon.com/Lois-Loose-Motorcycle-Across -Americas/dp/0312352212 and check out her website for photos.

I'm sure there's something in this book for a lot of folks, but I have to agree with those that didn't care much for this book. That is, aside from the misleading but catchy title. I didn't note much "Zen" about it. I'll just stop with that.

I read this book in the mid to late 70s and thought that it was excellent.

Last year I found my yellowed copy of the book and tried to read it again. My new opinion - What a bunch of dribble. I have a hard enough time trying to understand sane people.

I read that his son did not like the book. He said that it wasn't true.

Maybe my memory of the troubled man in this book should be left alone.
