That's ass-backwards. I traded my 03 Road King for the Uly XT.
But, if you had done that, I have some fingerless gloves and a couple of skid lids I'd give you a deal on. Sold the chaps a while back.

granted the rk is a great bike, ask anyone who's tried to keep up with jerry(ferris bueller). but i don't know whether he's ever been on a uly and would agree to that exchange. i rode my buddies before he upgrade to the ultra and it is a nice ride but if i'm going that route i'll stay with my ultra also. as soon as i figure out some tunes and cruise control, then i'll definitely have the best of both worlds.

I loved my 03 Road King police model. The road sofa was a very comfortable ride for those all day rides. I did get tired of constantly scraping the floor boards in the corners and polishing all the chrome but there are days I really miss her.

I really loved my '96 FLHP. Had it for years, tons of miles (and floorboards, LOL). When I bought the Uly and my wife rode on it the first time..."we don't need the road king anymore".

Although...I do still miss the "respect mah authoritah" paint job from time to time : )

Last thing I rode with floor boards was a stripped down Cushman Eagle - my first "dirt" bike.

Curious - the juxtaposition of a road king w/a Uly seem like extremes in the range of bike types.

What prompted/motivated all the prior owners of road kings to trade their cruisers for a
completely different mode of riding experience?

Traded it in for my 2005 Road Glide

I still have the Road Glide with the Uly

When the road ended, the king turned around. It's a great road bike and handled fairly well, but did nothing for me in the twisties. Stumbling upon the advrider site one day had nothing to do with it.
Didn't take too long (an hour's test ride) to figure out that I could have the best of both worlds with a Uly. Plus, I don't miss polishing chrome.

Truthfully, I kinda got tired of not being to take a nice curve without scraping the floorboards and it seemed like I spent as much time cleaning and polishing as I did riding. Can't let a Harley get dirty, it might not out shine the bike next to you. I think I added every extra piece of chrome possible and most likely added an extra 50lbs to the bike. The other thing that turned me off to the Harley crowd was the insanely loud pipes and the "if you don't ride a Harley" attitude. I could care less what you ride as long as you ride.

The Buell still provides the V-Twin motor I love in a unique package and has no chrome which is a big plus for me. I had never heard of Buell until I saw one while doing a track day on a Suzuki SV650 in 2006. The moment I saw the bike I feel in lust with it and knew I would be buying one. I had a few problems with the first one I bought (XB12SS) and started thinking I would like something else because of the service I received (or lack of) from my local dealer so I switched to BWM for a while but I really missed the V-Twin so I'm back to stay. I have a used XB9 for now but I hope to get a new 2010 Uly when they hit the floor. I will most likely use the XB9 for commuting and the track and the Uly for nice weekend rides and longer trips.

For general information, Ferris drove my 2006 Uly from WI to CA as documented on the FBRAT thread. After that epic adventure he went out and bought his Road King. He put my Uly through as thorough a testing as anyone could have and it did fine, other than some personal issues that he documented. I still have that Uly along with a Street Glide and a Heritage Softtail. The Uly is one of my favorite motorcycles of all time and is about to get a lot better with another round of modifications.

This may be a silly question as I haven't been on Badweb for a while, so try to forgive my ignorant bliss, but is it true Buell is eliminating the HD V-twin for 2010 in the Uly's? I read somewhere that they are going to the water cooled engine from the 1125R.

There are a lot of options being explored by Buell. The 1125 engine will probably be getting a smaller sibling in the 800cc range for european regulations and I have heard that it is a candidate for the ULY. The 1125 in a semi off road bike presents real problems, XT version would seem to be a natural fit as its geared more for on road use. Rumours aren't really helpful and July isn't that far away, altho Buell has introduced new models early.

There is a clip on you-tube of Mr.buell(Can't remember his name)saying that the air cooled 1203 in the uly was going to be around for along time, due to popularity. This interview was in late fall of 08.

Flick even said, as long as they keep selling, they will keep building them. Dosen't mean there won't be 1125 Uly's next to the 1203's.

Hogs are great for what they are intended to be. That is a great looking, great sounding, and great running cruiser. I have never had any bike and I mean any bike as refined as my Low Rider. It is bar none the most polished bike I have ever owned. That being said it is no sport bike, not even by any stretch of the imagination. A Buell is a Buell and a Harley is a Harley. It is sort of like trying to compare a BMW with a Dodge 1500 Ram Hemi. Both are awesome vehicles. But neither are like the others in any shape or fashion. You couldn't have the polished ride in the Dodge as you could in the BMW, also you would never have the brute force of the Dodge in any BMW. Try to see each vehicle for it's intended purpose. That way you can live your life with more than one bike, like me.
