Yesterday I noticed a slight fluid leak (red color) that seems to originate where the clutch cable connects to the primary cover.

I've searched Badweb and see that I may have to replace the clutch cable.

I also changed the battery recently and read several posts that referred to a similar leak being caused by a pinched transmission vent hose (or something close to that) that might be around the battery area.

Any expertise or similar experiences that would help me fix this? Is a bit of fluid leaking from this spot normal? I'm at work, so I haven't checked the amount of leakage overnight, but it was enough to collect a little where the clutch cable touches the chin fairing.

My bike is an '06 with about 27K miles.

Thanks!

I'm also having this problem, and would love to hear suggestions other than just wrapping tape around it( which does work very well BTW).

My '08 leaked where the outer casing
was crimped to the end. I used clear
silicone, but eventually it was replaced
under warranty.

I would replace the cable if you're still running the original. They wear out, the new one will feel like butter and you'll wonder why you let the old one get so bad.

Speaking of clutch cables, what's the deal with the rubber boot around the adjuster?
Is its primary function the collection and storage of water?
The last time I removed it (just recently) it was soaked again and the adjuster was rusting up nicely.
I dried it all off and packed it as best I could with bearing grease before sliding the boot back over it.

Any other solutions to this issue? Sorry about the hijack.

Tginnh, Put a zip tie on both ends of that boot to keep out moisture! To much moisture and it will run down the inside of the cable to the primary. not good.

I don't understand the RED color fluid leak. Red is usually brake fluid. Primary/clutch oil has a green tint. Assuming you use the formula + oil.

I'm going to go ahead and replace the clutch cable - can only help.

To confirm, besides the clutch cable, I need to replace the seal from the clutch inspection/primary cover. Is there anything else I'll need to order to get the job done?

If anyone will be kind enough to supply part #s for what's needed, I'd be grateful.

Why is it that Buell doesn't publish the fiche for parts? Is it just so we have to buy a parts book? Service manuals I'll gladly pay for, but parts??

Thanks for all the help so far.

>>>Why is it that Buell doesn't publish the fiche for parts?

To quote Obe Jaun . . . . "now that's a name I've not heard in many years".

Buell publishes an excellent parts manual and all dealers have a complete parts breakdown for every Buell.

To clarify

Why isn't there a free parts list for Buell online?

Cool . . . I see you are also a writer. As a librarian who remembers the term "fiche" (kids look it up) you'd dig this photo I took of one of the libraries I write in.

There are also two other libraries I work in, one public and one private, and the architecture is amazing.

Hey Court - Great photo. I'm lucky enough to work as a research librarian at the Harold Washington Library, the main Chicago public library - amazing place.

I'll PM you about writing, etc. I'm always interested in what other writers are up to.

That is soooooooo cool.

I do most my writing at Butler Library at the moment, mostly as a matter of convenience since my classes are on the campus.

I often use Avery, also on campus. It's the International Architecture Library and is pretty well confined to Graduate and Ph.D. candidates so it's a great place for mental space.

In the past, I've worked at the New York Public Library (getting ready for it's 100th Anniversary) and will likely be back there soon . . . simply because I graduate in May and er . . . the models from all the agencies come back to Bryant Park in May.

I have two other favorite places, one a private library well hidden in New York City near Grand Central Station and the Yale Club which is across the street from Grand Central Station.

Mostly . . . for me. . . it's a place to hide and read.

I'll be there a great deal in the next 3 weeks as I just got the wonderful news that I have (much to my wife's disbelief) been contracted to give a speech before a rather large group on the 19th of May.

Libraries may be our nations greatest resource.

These were taken a couple weeks ago while I was taking a couple Badwebbers on one of my "New York Out of the way places" tours.

By the way . . . I've always been spoiled by being around great libraries. I attended Topeka High School in Topeka, KS which has a very famous library that looks much like the photos above.

As to Staves' inquiry, why doesn't Buell provide access to IPLs online? I can find them for pretty much every other manufacturer. Really speeds up parts ordering, plus eliminates many errors made in trying to translate to a parts guy what you are actually looking for. I've had to send back quite a few parts over the years(not Buell....yet) because of miscommunication when ordering. Has NEVER happened when I had access to an IPL and had the actual part # in hand though........just saying.

Either the IPL should be included IN the service manual or access readily granted IMHO. Hell, I have some products(older obviously) that actually included the IPLs in the OWNERS manual. Why have manufacturers gotten protective of this info? Rant off..............

Cool pics Court.

Make sure the cable and boot is in good shape. Lubricate the cable then zip tie only the top of the boot over the adjuster. This way when rain water enters the top of the cable, it will be able to escape through the bottom of the boot, before it gets to your primary.
