Hey Gary: Not selling, just seeing if a win-win trade might be out there, certainly not going bike-less. You're not too proud to ride with non Buells, I hope! Or, as another option lower the Uly and lower the gearing... but that starts to add up. Frankly, what happened is I was riding with my wife (one reason I bought the Uly is it's reputation for passenger comfort) and we had a zero mile per hour tip over... no harm done except minor scratches on a puck and a $2.50 turnsignal lens cracked. My wife was NOT impressed! After over 30 years of riding without subjecting her to mishap this was embarrassing. I can't completely blame the bike - if I was on the ball enough I could have coped with stopping on an off camber hill. On the other hand once it started happening there was no stopping it, and I tried! The damn thing is so top heavy, especially with a passenger. We continued on to have a great ride and we both still love the bike. Yet, this tip over risk is built into the sheer height of the bike and I don't want to lose the confidence of my wife - I have friends whose ladies won't ride with them anymore. | ||

Growl; I can understand where your coming from. I loved my '06 Uly, but when the XT came out, I was on it like a shot. The XT is everything my Uly was to me, but just enough lower to make off camber stops and parking lot maneuvers much more manageable. I have a 30" inseam, and the XT just flat fits me. Rather than trading for a lower bike that doesn't handle as well, and makes less power, why don't you consider getting XT suspension components? | ||

You're going to spend a lot of money trying to make that Sporty comfortable for 2-up. I tried, finally realized you can't make 3 inches of travel comfortable, IMO. | ||

Hi Growl, I did the same thing with my wife on the back. She didn't know to put a foot down and help once we started going over and since I couldn't hold both of us and the bike we went to the pavement. It was my fault and we laughed about it later but it is embarrasing. We still ride together and I'm just more careful in parking lots now. I agree that you will have a very difficult time making a sportster comfortable for two-up riding and you'll never match the smoothness and handling of the Uly. I'm only 5'9" with a 30" inseam and we do OK. It helps that the bike squats some with both of us on it. Lowering it is probably your best option as my opinion. BC Steve | ||

My wife almost helped me to the pavement on her first attempt at climbing on. The tip over is the only thing that worries me when 2-up. And I'm on an XT w/low seat. | ||

Ourdee, have you tested the XT suspension on any rough dirt roads? My wife is dubious about going to shorter shocks because we ride 2-up on gnarly dirt roads and she appreciates the plush ride. Gary: good to hear you'll still ride with any bike but would you ride with a guy with disco boots? I happen to have a pair of boots with worn out soles. Been thinking of repairing them anyway... not going disco extreme :-) but will inquire if I can't add 1/2" or 2/3" lift. That combined with a good tread for traction might help some. | ||

Growl, I haven't rode an X, so not sure how it compares. I've rode through some real bad pavement that is pretty close to off road. I had me 220 and son 100 on it and it handled it very smoothly. You will still have 5" of suspension. I don't know if it will be enough for you, especially if you are pushing the limits on your X. My wife and I put it past the vehicle weight limit. I would not take it into the rough with us on it. Remember the rims are not as heavy duty either. Hey, on the boots, do you have any military bases around? The security guys used to get extra thick soles put on military jump boots when I was in. I wore the jungle boots most of the time and never saw any sense in messing up my jump boots that way. But it could work for my bike. | ||

FWIW I take my XT on broken road surface and decent truck trails 2up no problem. Wife does not like the real rough stuff and I don't like a pillion there either. I think the XT is an excellent compromise for us inseam challenged riders (30" here). Wife & I combine for about 290lbs. I've had one low/no speed tip over, off camber, in front of a Kawi/Suz/Polaris dealership no less. To make matters worse somehow the horn button got mashed so it stayed on continuously with the key (I think my thumb caught it while trying to "save" it). A little manual tweakin' ended the embarrassment. No pillion on board though. | ||

Thirty inch inseam, I dont dare ride the uly comfortably.... get the seat cut, put the XT shocks and fork springs on it, or eat beer and pizza for every meal and compress those shocks. keep it! Having both the Bueller in the garage, and a Sportster... The CityX is the one that gets out of the garage more. There is no mile to smile comparison. Not even close. | ||

Growl; Why don't you rent a Sportster for a day, and go for a ride with your wife? That way you'll know what you're in for with a Sportster. If you like it, then try to work out a trade. It would really suck if you traded your Uly for a bike you didn't like. It was a Demo ride that put me on a Buell, and it's Demo rides that keep me on my Buell. If I found a bike that felt better, I'd probably buy it. | ||

my inseam is 32 inches and on flat ground im barely touching the balls of my feet. a new pair of icon field armor boots helped alot as their stiff and take a little pressure off my toes. | ||

Growl, when I got back into riding, I got a sportster. The problem was that with my wife on the back, the sportster got pretty small fast. She and I are about average build. |
