What I found interesting is that it wasn't a plug and play. They have changed the #77 connector from a flat blade to a pin connection. You have to disassemble the connector on the bike and cut the wires right behind the crimp. Strip off a 1/4" of insulation. I put dielectric grease on the wires then crimp on new connectors. Insert them into the new style housing and lock them in with a locking wedge. Now it will mate with the new connector housing on the regulator. It didn't take all that long and I was glad they got around to fixing an obvious problem for so many although mine still looked fine. I checked the new regulator out and at 4000 rpm it read 13.8 V instead of 17! I had received the osram bulbs and installed them. It's daylight so I have no idea if they are better, they sure can't be worse! May take a ride tonight and find out. Well I mainly wanted everyone to know about the new design on the 77 connector. I consider it an admission of guilt but at least they did something about it!

Lawyers won't let them admit guilt: the connector was good before but now it's better!

Look for the new and improved connector at a H/D dealer near you.

I tried that last weekend at the 2009 Porsche Launch . . . .I told them that the long hailed introduction of the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) was tacit admission that the TipTronic was flawed.

Didn't seem to get much traction . . . . .

Tootal- I saw a recent post about this on the XB board and put a post in the "New Owner Info" section/charging systems issues thread here.

Court, that's funny, seems Porsche and BMW seem to have the same attitude! My friend just had to change all the valve springs on his 944! Only 74,000 miles and it's a common problem. Just didn't expect that from Porsche.

Thanks Hugh.

Perhaps that $20 VR connector kit I found would let people update the connector.

Greg, what sort of crimping tool did you need to crimp the updated pins?

I read about the new connectors and someone was going to order them, but they never got back to us about them. Also as Rays asks what is the special tool needed to convert to the new connectors? When I read about the connectors and found out I needed a special HD tool to convert I just stopped right there.

That's true, they say you need a special crimping tool but I used a professional electricians crimper and it worked fine. Crimper's that just mash the connection would probably not work. The one I used is half round on one side and has a raised piece that mashes a rectangular impression into the other side to lock it in place. I'm getting ready to load the Uly and take it to the stealer. They put a new muffler valve actuator on under warranty and it quit working before I got back from Buelltoberfest last October. It failed in the open position and I kind of liked the sound but I'm tired of the check engine light staring at me. I'm hoping they will admit they screwed up and replace it since I'm now out of warranty, they're pretty decent over there. When I get back I'll see if I can get a picture of the crimper I used if that will help.

Well I'm back from the dealer and they won't cover it. They admit the new one has been upgraded with steel gears but I'm going to pay for it. I think I'll call Buell customer service and have a note posted in, Court in Session, and get his opinion. I really didn't expect that, they are usually pretty good guys.

Tootal in your opinion does the new connector look like it is an improvement?

Definitely. I would and did use dielectric grease to keep it good.

Seeing as how mine melted down and left me stranded in the left lane of a dual lane hi-way during rush hour, without a median, I think I will get the new connector. It would be nice if Buell made it a recall isue due to safety. But on the other hand the reason I have a Buell and talked Fiancee' into trading up from her BMW was this type of approach to correct problems quickley.

I called Buell yesterday and got through very quickly where I met John. I told him my problem and gave him my information. I was polite! He looked up my records and they jived with what I had said. He said he would look into it and gave me a number. He said he would call back that night or the next day. I hung up, jumped into the shower, soaked my head and the phone rang. It was John calling to let me know that in the interest of customer service, or something like that, he was going to take care of the actuator for me. Have a nice evening! I swear it was less then 15 minutes from when I hung up. That is what you call service. Well done Buell!

As usual, no warranties expressed or implied, I only found the number, I have not seen it or know any more than what I already provided. It could be a box of used condoms for all I know.

Froggy - Can you clarify what that is? Is it a kit that upgrades the 77 connector on pre-08 Ulys?
