Just bought brand new Uly 08 and have a problem already.
Bike stalling and backfiring between 1000 and 2500 rpm's so it is impossible to ride, not to mention kind of embarrassing for a brand new bike and need for break in engine properly.
Any suggestion is welcome.
Nearest dealer is 700 miles so it is just too far to pop in.
I still have XB9R '03 with 20K miles and never had any problems. Will keep it as I just love these bikes.

I would pull the spark plugs. There is a procedure for cleaning them on the '08's, but saving a wet fouled plug is like fighting a loosing battle. Many new bikes have gone out the door with this issue.

Next I would check the battery connections. I don't know about the '08 bikes, but on '06's and '07's they still had the problem where the battery bolts needed a washer on them to make it tight enough. The bolt would bottom out just as it got tight.

Then I would check the plug wires for tight and properly seated on both ends. Un-plug and re-plug the ECM plugs, and start looking at ground wire connections.

Tomi- Sorry about your troubles. Another thought would be to drain the fuel and replace with fresh fuel. If the bike has been sitting at a dealership for months it may be "stale".

08 has auto TPS reset- but there is a procedure here somewhere to "force" the automatic TPS reset process. Might be worth a try.

Take it in and get the dealer to fix it pronto. Why do anything yourself. Strip a plug hole and see what happens. Don't get involved get it fixed by them. You may do everything you are told here and not even come close to fixing it. Get an appointment and bite the bullet. Get it fixed properly and enjoy the bike rather than doing all sorts of things and not liking it.

Did it do it right away or did it run OK at first, something may have come unhooked, check all plug ins and connections.

I think there is a warranty program where they pick up the bike no matter where it is... I'm sure it cost extra... but might be worth it considering your location.

town where I live is small and seems that Uly just doesn't like running on short distances and takes longer to reach proper running temperature. I did reset TPS and warm it up properly so stalling and backfiring suddenly disappeared.
will try tomorrow again....still wondering why such a problem when cold? Can dealer remap fuel program on cold run ?
Thank you all for help

The 08's take a little longer to warm up from my observation, the oiling system is different and the bike runs a lot cooler than previous years.

Ahhhh you may need to heed the let it warm up for a while program. A lot of us learned that the hard way too. Here is what I figured out about that.

If I start the bike only touching the throttle if needed, and let it warm up for about three to five minutes at idle, it will run flawlessly. If I rush it and try to take off within a minute or so it will run rough and sputter for about ten minutes of riding.

I find that if I am going to ride a short distance, where it doesn't warm up completely, I make sure to ride at least twenty minutes on the way back. It seems a little fickle, but for mine that has allowed me 36,000 miles without fouling a plug so far.

What dealer did you purchase from?

What dealer does the service?

700 miles is the closest dealer?

Can you post a picture?
I'd like to see a "Tomi" that goes
by "Helga"!
Is "Tomi" a girls name in Croatia?
Just curious!

Never had any probs with my 08. Let mine warm up as I put on my gear, button up the garage, etc. Couple of minutes tops, I don't blip the throttle, get on 'n ride. I also don't try to get on it for a few miles(but don't baby it either), as I live on some really crappy roads it's not a problem to "warm" it up for a few miles to get to decent blacktop.

A Bueller in Croatia, now that's cool....

....but 52%? That's insane. Is that some kind of protection tarriff?

Good luck, hope your reset straightened it out.

We should have those tariffs on Japanese bikes coming here. Buell sales would do much better then! That is some dedication to spend that much extra just to have a Buell. Good on you Tomi

to Choyashi : Thanks God I am not :-)
but if you need someone to handle the boat (any size) let me know

52% is not protection tariff ...it is....@#$%^ my comment would be too rude for public. You should see car prices!!
Dedication......
Can't help myself....I bought 9R in December 2003 and after 6 years every time I sit on this bike makes smile on my face. Bike with soul.
Longest day run was from Austria to Dubrovnik 580 miles with wife behind on 9R..... that time I started to plan to buy something maybe more comfy :-)
that's how Uly came in picture....
By the way my son name is Erik....only at that time I was driving Suzuki Bandit.. :-)....
Friend's joke now as if you have Buell in Croatia you might be considered "strange"......I have two...that explains a lot about me....

I would not worry about the Uly for the short trips, just let it warm up good and it will get better as it breaks in.

i pulled up your website page and man i have to say you have to be one lucky guy. those mountains look great. it sucks that you would have to go so far to the dealer but it would make for a nice long weekend trip though by the looks of it. good luck and that is pretty cool that you like the buell a lot.

Helga - Don't know of others experience, but on my 08' I've used irridium plugs with no signs of fouling after 10K miles. Given your distance to dealer I'd definately get the manual & do all but serious warranty work myself. It's relatively easy to work on. As others have said: DO let it warm up for 2-3 mins - do NOT touch throttle while in warm up mode - FI/ECM system doesn't like that. Great pic of the harbor - beautiful country. There are only about 7,000 Uly's world wide - you may have the only one in Croatia! Be well - ride safe.

You state that you own a 9r but how did you ever buy a Buell to begin with? As Jphish said you probably own the only Uly in Croatia. Congratulations and welcome to BadWeb. I hope you solve your problems and enjoy your Uly.

Next time you are in Slovenia, tell Akrapovic you want an exhaust for your Uly.
You might get the ball rolling.
