If I'm reading right

I need to just watch for muffler rusting, bearings and maybe brakes pulsing and not enough light?

It already rusted, you just haven't looked hard enough : )

Hell I had a pipe that was on my bike for 1000 miles, took it off for the race pipe, and the stock pipe rusted sitting in a box for a few months.

I had my muffler ceramic coated in the fall. The rust is already starting to show again.

I've had it since Sept., 6 Months, and the muffler looks like an old Ford out in the field.

EJC who did you send your muffler to? I was going to send mine to Jet Hot next winter but not if it isn't any better than painting it.

What would you suggest is the best coating? My bike has 2,000 miles and there is heavy rust. I'm betting it's zero problem but sometime I'll likely take it off and coat it with something.

What's best?

Court people have used hi-temp barbeque grill/stove paint, hi-temp header paint, conventional powder coating, and Jet Hot ceramic coating. Ejc's is the first time I've seen someone mentioning the ceramic coating fail. Maybe improper prep or application?

Sounds like the deal is:

  • Remove
  • Sand well
  • prime with high-temp
  • paint with high-temp
  • paint with high-temp
  • replace
  • ride


Anybody had better luck with any certain high temp paints?

Court- I'd think sand-blasting would be preferable if you have access. It'd give a better texture for the paint to bond to. I haven't seen any high-temp primer. IIRC the high-temp exhaust paint says apply directly to metal. A few people have baked the muffler in an oven after coating; this may be a better curing process than "replace and ride".

Rust appeared again after a few months, but I did the work with the muffler on the bike. I used a Dremel with a wire wheel to get into the tight spots.

FWIW, the day I got my Uly from the dealer I waxed the bejezus out of the muffler with that Honda Glare polish with Glassplexin. WebBikeWorld did an article on it and said it was suitable for waxing chrome pipes since it seems to stand the heat pretty well. Did not wax the headers however.

I rewax occasionally but not religiously and it has done pretty well. No repainting on my 06 yet but this might be the year. I do keep it in a heated basement however.

The stuff is expensive but seems to work ok. Not happy with it on the frame however. Not sure what the problem is on the frame as there can be a bit of a hazy appearance to the paint.

Carefully outdoor storage is essential . . . . if yiu let your bike lie down and rest it will be happier. . .




However. . .this is going to have to be dealt with . . . eventually.



NOTE: That is a muffler with less than 2,000 miles and very little time in the rain.

You're not supposed to reuse the front muffler strap (though I did because the dealer didn't have one in stock.) The strap costs something like $20. I seem to remember someone finding similar straps at a marine supply store for $7. Anyone remember the details and if it actually fit?

In the interest of adding value to this thread, so that a person can come here, get a sense of the condition and the resources needed to resolve it, here is the parts list for the exhaust in case someone needs to order the clamp. I don't think functionally the rust causes a bit of problem but I have enough ugly in my life without this . . . I think I'll just paint it and see how it holds up.

I had the exhaust on my '06 Uly Jet Hot coated. 16,000 miles and a year and a half later it still wasn't showing rust.
It will cost less to do the right thing for your bike than it would cost to spend one night at the Country Inn in East Troy.

To some extent, that depends on whether you believe the service manual's claim that you have to replace the $20+ muffler strap, as well as the torca clamp, every time you remove the muffler.

Jlnance, see your local big-rig supply house, get an intake air t-bolt clamp. Hose suppliers may also have them.

5 1/2-6" is the range you're after, take your old one with you. Under $10 and available everywhere but your local Harley dealer...

Court, Ourdee, you guys must have some NASTY road chemicals where you ride! I want to repaint my muffler too and plan on Duplicolor High Heat Ceramic, but my rust "problem" is very minor even at 55K.

People around me won't ride in the winter. I'll probably knock out a 100,000 miles before it gets all the way through.

Trick to getting the pretty brown color is to get it hot, alternate blasting it with salt water and sandy water mixes. Reheat it as needed and reapply water solutions. I ride mine in the rain on purpose.

I just got off the phone with Pat at Moore Power Coatings in Waverly, Nebraska which is about 45 miles from where I live. I explained that I wanted my Buell muffler ceramic coated satin black and he said it would cost $50.00. I asked him what the cermaKrome ceramic coating would cost since it is their most resistant to road salt and he said that was $50.00 also. Turnaround about a week. He said they have done 3 Buells recently but all had different type muffler systems (his words). $50 seems like a killer price compared to some of the prices I've seen discussed on this site. I asked about prep and he said the they do it all themselves and take off all rust and paint before coating.

My question for you guys is this : It's just the outside that gets coated, right? What about that interactive exhaust valve, does it need special handling by the guys doing the ceramic coating? Thanks.

Sponge brush, can of bar-b-q paint, light sanding. detach back bolts on front chin fairing to get sponge under there, good for a year riding.
