What do you think the chances are for Buell to update the XB/Uly frame/swingarm by making them longer? This could result in a few improvements ie. more fuel capacity for longer range, more oil capacity for a cooler running engine, more space in the engine compartment for better engine heat management, more wheelbase for more on/off road stability, more leg room and ergonomic options for taller and bigger riders. And how about bigger and better round twin headlights, standard two power ports up front and heated seat, and ABS option? While we're at it, what about an 18" rear wheel/tire and 19" from wheel/tire. Am I off-track with this level of imagineering for the beloved Uly? | ||

Well, that wouldn't exactly be an "adventure sportbike" would it. Plenty of manufacturers make the bike you describe. I like my short wheelbase, poorly lit, hot legged, low fuel capacity, giggle machine. NUTS | ||

So if Buell made an XB12XL, you guys are saying that it'd ruin the Ulyness of the bike? A little more wheel base and fuel capacity would hurt the fun factor? I would think a little more comfort and range would make it a better adventure tourer....not a trail putter, but and all surface adventure tourer. I've always liked the big KTM and BMW adventure bikes, but all capabilities being equal in the way I'd ride them on/off road, I like the simplicity and lower maint. schedule of the Ulys waaaay better. And I read somewhere that the smaller F800GS has a slightly longer wheelbase than the R1200GS making the 800 a stable on-road bike and capable off-road bike... thus my imagineering of a slightly longer Uly. you guys are saying that it'd ruin the Ulyness of the bike? Absolutely. A "larger" frame would have to be longer in order to accommodate more fuel since wider would be too wide to straddle. It would have to be several inches longer in order to accommodate enough additional fuel to be worth the effort. The volume of oil that would provide for markedly cooler running would be so large that it would add too much weight. The oil doesn't run at that high a temperature in the current design. More legroom would be difficult to provide given that the ULY has some of the longest seat to peg distance available. Erik has already said that for a "street bike", which the Uly is, that he wouldn't compromise handling. The 18" rear and 19" front would DEFINITELY compromise handling. Now, if you wanted a Uly with equal range, better heat management, more space, 18" rear, 19" front and are willing to operate on a 1125 platform, I think there might be some hope. I don't see ANY of the changes you are asking from the XB line. | ||

So why do the 1125r and CR have bigger fuel tanks? I'm cool with the height and everything, but I could go with just a tad more rake out front. Just a tad. And another 3/4 gallon of premium. | ||

1125 has no fins for cooling except for the pincer claw radiators. Smaller heads allow the 1125 frame tank to go in further thus more gas capacity. I'm looking forward to the water cooled 6 speed Buelly Muelly. | ||

XB12cg, fuel capacity = 3.82 gal., wheelbase = 51.8 XB12Ss Long, fuel capacity = 4.40 gal., wheelbase = 53.7 Both great bikes. Both handle well. One just a little longer with a tad more fuel capacity. I know the Uly is based on the Long's frame/swingarm set. Based on the slight difference between the cg and Ss, I would think that a little difference between the present Uly and an XL Uly wouldn't be that bad, either. Ok...I know my imagineered bike has a snowflake's chance in hell, but it was fun dreamin'. (Message edited by pigseye on March 16, 2009) |
