God forbid anything happen while riding alone (or riding PERIOD), but who do YOU call when you break down, go down, run out of gas, etc.? I ask because there are times when I might be 200 miles from home and in the middle of nowhere - the thought of calling my girlfriend to "come out and get me" just doesn't seem right (though she would). Who do YOU call? Do you have a towing service plan? How do you find a phone number when you're out in the sticks and haven't seen a sign for miles(Internet/satellite/etc.)? - Family/friend/Significant Other? - BRAN member? - Any random gas station/towing service? - H.O.G./other towing service plan? | ||

Any time I go on a long trip I bring the BRAN list, currently that and my cell phone are my only protection. I have been meaning to sign up with a few roadside programs to help should something happen. | ||

Both AAA and AMA memberships come with motorcycle roadside assistance and towing. Nice to have in a pinch. | ||

I have the AAA Plus RV that covers motorcycles - I've used it once already, and they were great. I thought there would be a co-pay associated with it, but when I used it, there was no charge whatsoever. John | ||

Hi John, I have the AAA Plus RV too and luckily have not had to use it yet. One of the things to be very specific about if you need to be towed is that you tell them that it is a motorcycle and they must come with a flatbed truck. This is talked about every once in a while on the Beemer list I'm also on and folks have had towing damage done due to the handling and tie down methods used/abused. The towing companies have also showed up just a cradle/hook type of truck and want to tow the bike suspended behind the truck even after the request for a flat bed. Obviously you don't want your bike swaying in the breeze on the hook as its towed. | ||

I had to use the AAA service once for my Suzuki- it was great! Was on the way home from work, about 25 miles out. When he got there and verified my coverage he just asked "Where to?". I said "Home, James" and he did! | ||

I have AAA and Mow tow with AMA I broke down in Kentucky last year and used MOW tow, should have used AAA. The tow truck dispatch is gonna want to take you to the nearest HD dealer, insist on being taken to a Buell HD dealer. If you go to a HD dealer you will most likely get towed again! Hopefully the next 2 big trips I take on the ULY will restore my confidence in the bike. I'm printing out the BRAN network too when I travel this year. K | ||

As for the BRAN, if you ever want a personalized BRAN, all you have to do is e-mail me the list of states you want and I'll e-mail it to you in an Excel spreadsheet. | ||

You figure it out.....or you start pushing until someone with a pickup stops to help. Don't call the buds, because their all high, and will tell you to "F" off! If it's just gas, the first motorcycle that see's you is obligated to stop, but you might have to carry the gas back on foot! Watch out for old fags willing to give you a ride..........don't wait for a couple of hot chicks in a convertible. It ain't happening!! | ||

long trips I carry extra gas and a quick syphon in the event of a total emergency. Most of the time, I am out of bounds, off the beaten path. I usually check in with the ranger. Worst case scenario, I have an avalanche trouble beacon, | ||

I always figured if my bike broke down I could g0 to a U-haul and rent one of their small trucks to get home in a have to case. But I have never had to use one. | ||

Last time i checked AAA does not cover motorcycle towing in all 50 states. Mine happens to be one of them. So, I went with the AMA Motow. Thankfully, I have not had to use it. As a side note, right now if you renew your AMA membership and sign up for automatic renewal you get roadside assistance free (used to be $25). Also, it's not called Motow anymore. |
