For those of you who have ridden with both the Drummer and the Buell Race muffler, is one significantly louder than the other? I've got a Drummer on my '08 but it's just too loud for the long touring days. I might have a potential trade lined up for a Race muffler but if it's just as loud as the Drummer, I don't want to bother. TIA. Tipsy | ||

Typsy, I can't comment on the Drummer or the Race muffler but I just got one of these installed today and it flat out rocks. It's got a deep thump to it, not loud and raspy like a lot of exhausts I've heard. The guy (Randy) has put a lot of time and effort into it and doesn't just gut the muffler like some others. I wear ear plugs but on the interstate on my way home tonight, you could still hear a low rumble. He's a jam up guy not looking to rip guys off or overcharge them, he even installed my exhaust for me after work today. Thanks for the recommendation Dirtysouth but I'm looking at a straight-up trade...my Drummer for his Race muffler. If I don't do the trade, I'm going back to stock. Tipsy | ||

The race pipe is quieter, not as deep, and has a nasty flat spot in the power band. I have never been able to set off a car alarm with the race pipe. In the American Sport Bike pipe shootout, the race pipe was rated at 120db while the Drummer was 123db. | ||

I've had both the Drummer and the Buell race pipe. I got the Drummer first. I mounted it on the bike, rode around for about 15 minutes and couldn't take it off fast enough. The droning in my helmet with that muffler was insane. Wasn't so much that it was too loud, just the droning in the helmet.....sold it immediately. Bought a Race Muffler and love it. Sounds nice (can ride on the freeway all day long without going deaf) and I haven't noticed any flat spot in the powerband although I guess it could be there, just not noticeable to me. I'm still using the stock ECM and I've got zero popping on decel, so I guess my bike's running a little more fuel fat than some others. If you're looking for a little more sound, that's the route I'd go. | ||

Does the Hawk Performance muffler still utilize the exhaust valve? Has anyone run their Hawk-equipped Ulysses (or other XB) on a dyno? | ||

Just got an e-mail back from Randy at Hawk Performance. He said he does not use the exhaust servo. | ||

Not to throw my own thread off-track but for those of you who are looking for alternatives, there's also VooDoo Fabrication. He's pretty active on BuelletinBoard. Not sure why he doesn't post here. Or maybe he's just not in Big, Bad and Dirty. I don't look at the other subforums much. I'll probably make the trade for the Race pipe. If it's still too loud, I'm going back to stock. I think the deceleration popping with the Drummer is more bothersome for me than the volume. Hopefully, the popping won't be as bad with the Race pipe. Tipsy | ||

I know how you feel because I had the drummer for about 3 days and removed it also. I also had a dyno done and it didn't make much difference. I got 1 HP and less torque where I wanted it. Nice piece of work just the same. Didn't take long to sell it though. | ||

Also had both the Drummer and the Race Pipe on the Uly. Drummer had a great deep sound and super workmanship but it "droned" on and became annoying. Got lucky and found a new race pipe and really like it. Best pipe made IMHO. No flat spot and nearly perfect sound. Can't quite figure out why someone in the marketplace has not stepped in to mfg a copy of the race pipe. If you can find a race pipe don't hesitate to grab it. | ||

I enjoy my race pipe. Not too loud, and it is still a jack point for the bike. I have not noticed any "flat spot", but I tend to ride the bike with the RPMs north of 4000 most of the time. Anything below that and my teeth come loose.  | ||

I had this dilemma before  ...and technically I still do (since I still own all of the above). I stated this before...but here it goes again. Noise level (from most quite to loudest) 1. Stock 2. Race 3. Drummer Mid Range torque (from most to least) 1. Drummer 2. Stock 3. Race Smoothest riding below 2500 RPM's (low speed) 1. Drummer 2. Race 3. Stock High RPM power (top third) 1. Race 2. Drummer 3. Stock Smoothness at highway speeds 1. Stock 2. Race 3. Drummer Fuel economy 1. Same for all (+/- 1 mpg) Bottom line for me...I have used each muffler for at least 4000-5000 miles each and although I love the deep rich sound of the Drummer, and love the flat torque curve of it too, it was just too much sound volume for me. And I am not really talking about the decibel level because I wear in-ear monitors while riding so the sound level does not really bother me, but it is the deep throaty sound which causes an increase of vibrations while riding on the highway that I did not like. Again, I loved the sound...but just not the added vibrations that the beloved sound caused. The Race has less of the deep throaty sound, but more than the stock pipe, and therefore is not bad in the area of additional vibrations at highway speeds. But that mid range dip in torque started to really bother me after the excitement of a new pipe wore off. If I were going to me racing...then this would be a great pipe because it had a great power band in the upper third (which is where you would be most of the time), but for normal riding...the lack of mid range bugged me. I am back to using the stock pipe because the bike feels as smooth as glass on the highway (which is most of my riding) and with the whole servo thing...it really has a nice torque curve in the low to mid rpm range. And the answer is NO...I am not planning to sell either of the other two mufflers. Just in case I change my mood or mind...I can also change my pipe! |
