Does anyone sell just a topcase bracket for the Uly - I have been using a small Pelican 1300 case mounted to the tail for my tool kit, but I would like more room for my rain gear, etc., and was thinking I might want to mount a Givi E30 ($100 or so) but the tail might not be strong enough for this 30L topcase. IIRC, the tail says 11 lbs max, but I bet it can hold a lot more than that.

I'd like to avoid the pizza delivery guy look on the back of the bike, but I sure could use the extra space.

Any other ideas for small-ish topcases would be appreciated.

...thanks

.

I'm using this Fehling rear luggage carrier
(just the top case mount)

with a Givi E33.

Works well for what I need!

Being a KLR, I would say it is from JC Whitney which seems to be the official top case of KLR riders. Oh I have both. Works well and cheap.

Hey Sprintex,

Yep, right you are.

I traded my KLR on the Uly ... big mistake, wish I still had it for off-road use (and the Uly for everything else).... except on freeway, it was a great little bike.

I found this topcase from JCW ... pretty nice actually.

""Johnboy, any chance of a pic of the pelican mounted up? NUTS""

Hey Nuts,

Sure thing.

The camera angle makes it look a little bigger than it really is.

Pelican 1300 (10-3/4"L x 9-3/4"W x 7"D)

Tool Kit for the above Pelican 1300

Both shots are the Pelican 1450 (16-1/8"L x 13-1/4"W x 7"D)

Here's another Pelican shot

Hi Johnboy, that Pelican install looks good. What did you use to secure it to the Triple Tail? Is it still waterproof? Is it QD?

I'm a huge Pelican fan. The one draw back (depending on your personal needs) on a bike is the weight.

Think of carry capacity as the combined weight of the case + what you are carrying.

With the Pelican you use up quite a bit of the equation with the weight of the case before you put anything in it.

Just be mindful.

I had custom made Pelican cases built for travel and found out, that even with minimal packing, I pay overweight fees.

Its amazing how many of us had KLR's.I had a 250 and a 650,only problem was the cheezy suspension and brakes. My 650 met disaster on a dark Nov. night on a 75 mph corner, nothing but small pieces left.

""Its amazing how many of us had KLR's.I had a 250 and a 650,only problem was the cheezy suspension and brakes.""

Exactly ... the cheezy brakes and suspension is how I ended up with my Uly.

I liked my KLR650 a lot but I didn't feel safe riding it on the road with its stock susp. and brakes, so I priced suspension upgrades and then decided it made more sense to just get a whole new bike with a great suspension and bigger motor.

For me, it was the best decision I could have made...love the Uly, and feel way safer on it than the KLR.

I do however miss the off-road riding I did with it (no.... gravel roads and dirt roads are still roads), but for me, that only accounted for about 10% or so of my riding.

John

FWIW, I ended up ordering the Givi E340; next I'm going to see if I can
just mount it to the flipper tail, like I did with my Pelican cases,
without buying the topcase rack.

It'll fit my helmet, plus have room for my tools and rain jacket.

""Hi Johnboy, that Pelican install looks good. What did you use to secure it to the Triple Tail? Is it still waterproof? Is it QD?""

Hey Longdog,

Sorry I missed your post.

Several all-day rains last summer and it was waterproof.

If you mount the small box to the underside of the TT (triple tail) , you can lay the TT on the seat.

I used the existing two big holes in the TT and drilled two more - then just bolted
the box to the TT using fender washers against the TT and lock nuts inside the box...very secure and stable.

you can see the two tiny holes I drilled in this shot.

Also, Longdog, if you want a box that is between the Pelican 1300 and the Pelican 1450 in size, the
Hardigg Storm Case iM2100 Storm Case (14.2 x 11.4 x 6.5") is really nice...$60US

I've been trying to order the top box off of the police Uly but Buell Tech Services keeps telling me that it's a restricted part. I am at a loss because I just sold an 07 Uly a couple of months ago and I was able to get the customer the full police bags for his X. I know the top box will fit on my 06 Uly racks as I tried my customer's on. The supposed "Buell Guy" at tech services doesn't know much about about Buell by his own admission. Very very frustrating.

Duck you need to order the non police version. I don't have the part numbers for the outdoorsman cases yet. You could always get the case from a H&B distributor

That's inaccurate information.

NONE of the parts on the XP are "restricted". I was curious and set about ordering them from dealers just to see what happened.

P.S. - Out of curiousity, what would "Buell Tech Services" have to do with ordering?

When my Parts manager tried to order the part she was sent to tech services. None of it made sense to me, but she just kept getting told it it was a restricted part no matter who she talked to. She is not making it up. I was in her office while she was speaking with them

I am trying to order it through a Buell shop because I work there. I shouldn't have to go through another distributor. I'm just glad that it's me and not a customer that is dealing with this. I am sure we will get it worked out.

Here is the part number M0926A.1AU

I got that by breaking down the kit M1930.1AK which I got from the Buell P&A catalog

I work at Southside HD & Buell. Phone number is 757-499-8964 if you need to talk to me.

Finally got an answer from Buell that I can live with. Basically it comes down to a liability issue. Apparently Buell did some testing with the Outdoorsman on the Journey top rack and they didn't hold up(apparently the rack broke). My service writer spoke to someone at Buell named Alan and he gave us the full scoop. Much appreciated even though it's quite the bummer as I would love to have that large box along with my Journey side bags.

Hmmm.... I have the HB 45L on mine and I really can't see where it's going to be any more of an issue than the older topcase was. They latch on the same, as long as you don't over stuff the topcase, I can't see what would cause the failure.

I wonder if Court can find out more about this. I'm a bit concerned since I've been using the larger topcase since December. If we're not suppose to put these larger bags on the original rack, then I would like to know about it direct from Buell. As far as I know, you can order up a whole new set of bags (outdoorsman) and use the same bracket as the original Journey cases used. -- Calling Court. ; )

Technically...yes. I put XP side bags (outdoorsman) on an XT, and yes, they latch to the rack.

BUT.

They HIT the footpegs, not just brush them. That's folded. Lower the pegs, and your passenger better have bound their feet as a child - NO room (at least an inch less). And, you have to relocate the turn signals to the plate mount like with the full outdoorsman set.

Not hearsay. Done it with my own hands.

Also done with my own hands: Journey bags from the XT, onto the outdoorsman racks on the XP. Latches go to the back now, but they clear EVERYthing. The bags sit about an inch further back on the bike with these racks.

If you want to interchange - buy the outdoorsman SET, and substitute the journey BAGS onto it when you want the change.
