Open question: What would it take to get you to trade your current Buell in on a new one?
I love my 07 Uly and have over 22,000 miles on it, while there have been improvements on the 09 they are not significant enough for me to consider trading it in yet. If the next model year XB12X came with ABS/TCS, then I could justify it. An XB13X with a XBRR variant would also work. But what would it take for you to pull the trigger?

No way, man. I admit I'm no Einstein, but I'm smart enough to know you never get rid of a good vehicle. My bike has been trouble-free so far and I'm not getting rid of it.

Besides, at this point its a love affair with my bike and it would break my heart to let it go.

About £6,000 apparently! My 06 bike that I got for £7k new in April 07 is now worth maybe £2.5k. 3k if I'm lucky. My fault I guess for enjoying 21,000 miles in the first 14 months.

I don't have £6k, so I'll forego the slight improvements and keep what I've got and still love riding. Does everything I need and more, £6k would buy me a couple of other good used machines if I had it. Certainly don't need any fancy gizmos to control my bike, I prefer to do that myself.

I would buy an 09 tomorrow if I had the dough. Well I would buy a 1125CR and an Ural first, but again money is the only thing holding me back.

I can't seem to get rid of any bikes. I just buy them and keep them. That is why my house is falling down around me but i have a new 09 in the garage that isn't falling down. The little woman loves it...

I always thought that I was "going" to buy a Ulysses once Buell "smartened up" and put the rotax in it. I wouldn't be caught dead on that old technology crap... I finally caved and bought an 08xt with the old 1940's era 1200 motor.
Of course my rationale was I'll just trade up when they put the rotax in, right? After one ride, I was a absolute goner. So Go ahead , put that new fangled high tech gee whiz rotax in the Uly , I'll trade my old school ulysses when you pry it out of my cold dead hands.
Dunno if I was clear on that

6 Speed transmission.

+1, maybe. But that and a 6-gal fuel capacity would get me thinking... throw in real wheel bearings with real seals meant for the real world and I'd be sold!

But with no extra $$ to spend right now I'll just ride my '06 into the ground or until they stop making parts for it.

A balanced engine in a Uly would get my money.

That new seat cover has way too many hidden maintenance costs.

Ironhead , that would probably kill it for me, coming from 35 jap bikes over the years with balanced engines that were vibrationless, it is NICE to feel the thump of a motor that is alive beneath you. I wouldn't change that part.

I don't intend to trade in my 03 bolt for anything. Ever. I love my air cooled lump,
warts and all. I may one day end up with an 1125r in the garage next to it, but that
is still too far away for me to speculate on too much. Or maybe if Buell was to build
an 1125rt....

Besides money, it would take a new engine.

One that was smoother in the low revs but still had a nice v-twin throb.

One that didn't run out of revs at 6800rpm, where, by the way, it happened to make it's peak power forcing you to bounce it off the limiter frequently to get the most out of it.

One that could idle in traffic, and plod along at 5mph without pinging or overheating yet is just as happy running 130mph on a race track.

Yep....if they made that Ulysses.....I'd be hard pressed not to buy one. Leave everything else the same.

For now, the Ulysses is the best overall bike I've ever owned. It has a few warts, and all bikes do, but I still love it.

Don't think I will ever get rid of my Uly. But some day I WILL buy another Buell and then have some fun doing some real customizing to my "almost stock" 2006 model.

Like Widowmaker said...I love the engine for the purpose for which I use the Uly, but I do like how Buell makes the engine a little better, more reliable, and less maintenance intensive each year.

But the things I would like to see on my next Buell are:

1. Factory HID setup.
2. ABS, but only if Buell can find a way to do it affordably (like Erik said during homecoming 2007).
3. Additional switch blanks for accessories like Aux lighting and other gadgets.
4. Special tires with retractable spikes for extending the riding season.

and of course...

5. A black frame like on the 1125's!

Widowmaker, don't get me wrong, I love my XT and my 77 xlch. I made the mistake and road a friends SV. I now know what the Uly could become in regards to extreme comfortable touring. The less vibration the longer I can stay in the saddle.

I would trade my '08 Uly in a heartbeat! It has been a thorn in my side for almost a year now.
Terrible fuel mapping, surging, is the main complaint I have. But in the 9 months that I have owned it, it has spent 4 of them in the shop getting:
New primary chain, clutch, basket, etc.
New ECM, TPS, and AIT
Intermittant Speedo, traced to a bad connector
False neutral between 2nd and 3rd gear, which after "repair" ended up being a double shift to get it down into 2nd.
Until they sent a factory rep down to get it right. (it does shift good now)

I own 6 Buells, and this is the worst POS I have ever owned. Now I only have the surging problem.
But it has turned into a serious hate relationship with this bike. I'd rather ride my Harley that the XT.
$13,000 for a dust collector is kind of steep. : (

~Rant over~

When you push that starter button and the piston gets all the way around to compression stroke and Ba-boom it fires its almost comical.I guess thats part of what gives this bike so much character.
My last bike was an SV and that 90 degree engine is smooth but would I want it in this bike,I don't think so.
I never used to be a fan of this old engine design, but the way it calms down on the highway is why its still around.

Long live this improved but crazy old engine.

+1 on that Jlnance. It would have to be something I did not something Buell did. I love the Uly. I know where he is coming from when Chadhargis says "it is the best bike I have every owned".

Now, now....I said it was the best "all around" bike I've ever owned.

My FJR1300 had a better engine (the best of any bike I've ever owned), a better transmission, and lovely fueling (post Power Commander install). But....it was a 635lb pig that liked to drag its mufflers on the ground going around corners which tended to lever the rear tire up if you weren't careful.

It was 180 degrees from the Ulysses. Great motor...but wrong chassis.

The Ulysses has a great chassis, and handles great. It's more comfortable and it's 136lbs lighter than the FJR.

Now...stick the Rotax engine in the Ulysses, and you'd have a bike that had the stump pulling power of my FJR (125hp and 90ft/lbs at the rear wheel) combined with the lightweight, comfortable, excellent handling chassis....making it one of the best (if not the best) bikes in the world.

I'm 55 years old and I don't know how many more years I'm going to be riding but I do know that when I ride, it will be on my 2006 XB12X Ulysses because it's the best and the most fun motorcycle I've ever ridden! It will NEVER get traded! I traded my 1998 M2 Cyclone in my my Ulysses and I still miss it even though the Ulysses is a far better motorcycle. I'm never going to make that mistake again!

That's how I feel about two motorcycles I sold and shouldn't have. My 1995 Ducati Monster 900 and my 2003 KLR650.

Both of those bikes weren't much on the stat sheet, but man, were they fun to ride.

Still very satisfied with my stock 06.

Seeing the X is no longer available here it's going to be hard to replace anyway.

After just spending 4 days on a 07 GS, I know I wouldn't get that! Kinda left me cold....
I have developed a loyalty to the Buell brand and would most likely get another one. Put a tl/ strom twin engine in it and I would be even happier.

Put the 1125 engine in it, (along with all of the upgrades that have happened over the 07-09 models) and I'd trade it in. Unfortunately, I've got a decent amount of money in accessories, so I'd have to buy all that stuff all over again, which would be a pisser. So, in reality, I'll probably run this bike into the ground, and when they come out with the Buell Hoverbike, I'll be ready to trade in. Of course, by then the Uly will be worth about $10, so I won't get much trade-in value. So maybe I'll just keep it as a lawn ornament...

Yep. I would not trade in my '07 for the accumulated changes since, but at some point if they keep it up it may reach the tipping point.

I love my bike - my only gripes are minor: the range and surging. I'm used to the surging and of course I live with the range. It is hard to imagine that Buell could do much about the fuel capacity given that the frame seems like the least tweakable part of the X design.

If Buell switched the Uly to rotax I'd keep my 07 or get a Guzzi or a XR1200 or whatever aircooled bike is still on the market (if any).

Everyone who keeps asking for the rotax should also hope for a bigger frame .... The rotax is very thirsty and will kill our fuel range....
