I have searched but can not find anything on this fairly specific question. First, let me explain- I recently purchased an '06 Uly that came with the OEM HB side cases, BUT NOT a top case. I also already have a Givi monokey E41 top case off the bike the Ully is replacing (well, maybe replacing, I am not sure about this Ully thing yet...)so to save some money it seems logical to try and re-use the Givi. I am aware that it is difficult to purchase just the HB top case rack from the dealer, which is o.k because I am not really a fan of the look of that thing anyway. I am also aware that Twisted Throttle states the following in regards to the Fehling top case rack: "Without modification, our Ulysses topcarrier cannot be used in conjunction with the Buell OEM sidecarriers for Hepco-Becker sidecases." The key words that encourage me are: "Without Modification". Does anybody know what needs to be "modified"? Is the conflict just a shared mounting location? Both racks are made from steel so with a little cutting and welding I think I could over come that problem. Is there anything else? This could turn into an expensive experiment so I though I would first ask if anybody else has managed to pull this off and what I can expect.

Thanks in advance.
Jay

Will have a new design available in a couple of weeks. Bolts straight on without modification to the HB side mounts. PM if you're interested and I can send a photo or 2.

I have an 08 xt and HATE the top rack design , for commuting I like riding without the top bag and I think the rack hanging out there like an erector set is uuuuugly. Same as Gzj443 I have a monokey topcase and was attempting to figure out an alternative. I am 80% done but my solution involves the use of the triple tail. The monokey base will fit ontop of the triple tail when it is its fully back position , its really a ten minute job to add it. Then the Givi topcase sits on the triple tail. The trick is making the base plate attachment to the triple tail "quick release" so you can flip it up for passenger riding without having to undo the 4 allen bolts that hold the givi monokey base to the triple tail. Working on the solution to that now. What your left with is a great looking bike that can quickly add or subtract the topcase without having that ugly rack sitting up there. The topcase looks much better in the lower position that where it does now standing up in the wind also. All Givi cases have very nice optional backrests that attach to the front so passenger comfort is improved over the standard triple tail. And yes in my tests the triple tail can EASILY support a big top case without flex or movement. Just my thoughts on what I am working on to solve this.

if the allen screws fit trough the tripe tail holes you could make a metal plate where you have the holes heads for the allen bolts and a cut less wide than the heads, when you push it forward of back wards it would lock in place, it's just an idea.

Great suggestion Pontlee77 but a thought struck me , once I put the GIVI base plate on (which btw is really nice looking by itself and offers a great spot to mount a sleeping bag etc) I wondered aloud why you would ever need to take it off? If the triple tail is in the back position with the GIVI mount it looks sweet so why ever flip it up? The backrest you say? Well as I posted before the Givi topcases have a super comfortable backrest on them so if you have a passenger just throw the topcase on! Looks like my solution works for me! I get the storage , and the streamlined looks when the topcase is off!! YAHOO!!

Widowmaker and Strada I would like to see your creations if you could post pics. I also think the rack for the top case is a hideous looking monstrosoty (sp), but for extended travel I like a top case.

Yea, id be interested in seeing a few pics my self. I pulled my top case just as soon as I got her home, Ive been thinking about mounting a Pelican 1520 that I rigged for camera gear, Its not something I use on the bike very often, but its not something you leave attached when at a hotel so being able to clip in on and off quickly would be great.
I mounted it to a Jessie solo plate on my BMW GS, but im riding the Uly two-up so a rear rack will have to do. I have been thinking that I could modify the Uly rack to accept an aftermarket mounting system.

Gonna have to wait for some pics guys but it works fine measurement wise. The Uly is in Florida and I'm back in NY : ( We won't be reunited for about 6 weeks.....

I really think this solution will work for me!

Here's a few pix of another Uly where the guy combined the Fehling rear rack with the Touratech Zega side racks. If this will work, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do the same with the HBs.

Awesome, perhaps you should look into making those stealth luggage racks that never took off.

The idea of this rear rack is that it is useful when you do or don't want to use a top box which is normally no use for a tent, sleeping bags etc. These can just be led across the rack and strapped up.

Widowmaker2011, did you ever get time to mate up the Givi base plate to the triple tail/does it work? Anyone else do it?

I just got an '06 Uly and, if possible, want to use the set of Givis from my sv650.
