Monday morning and I just worked a deal where I can use my mandatory vacation time, but continue to work those days (just so the vacation comes off the books), then use the days laster in the year. This will allow me to take a full two weeks off in June to venture off and do part of the Transamerican trail with some buddies. However, instead of taking a real dual sport, I've decided to toss on a set of MT60's and take the Ulysses. While it might not be the best option, right now I can't afford to pick up a used dual sport, and go on the trip.

So am I crazy? Maybe... Anybody else ever try doing this trail on the Ulysses?

The Easter section, Tenn-Salida,CO shouldn't be a problem unless there is mud. There can be ALOT of mud in some places. A friend did that exact stretch this summer and only dumped his KLR 650 once. In the infamous slimey creek crossing.

Personally, I wouldn't take my Uly. I'd hate spend 4 days slipping the clutch and fry it in BFE. A cheap dualsport can be purchased and re-sold minimizing financial loss. Say $500 at the most. God Luck. NUTS

Since you're asking...yes, I think the Uly is no where near the correct tool for the job.

Here's a VERY comprehensive ride report my buddy has been writing as he (and his wife) make their way across the TAT on a pair of DRZ's.

I own both (a Uly and DRZ). If my goal were to enjoy myself and not crash many times in the middle of nowhere, I wouldn't even consider taking the Uly on the TAT.

You can retro fit a knobby rear tire to the front..

Thanks! I'll need to read the whole thing when I get home tonight.

I hope "tonight" is a euphemism for "the next week-and-a-half" because that's about how long it'll take for you to read the whole thread!

Wayne- there are quite a few ride reports on advrider about the TAT. I'd search and read as many as I could find before making a decision. After reading several I remember thinking that the TAT looks doable on a Uly but as Tipsy said, it might not necessarily be fun.

Sounds like an XB9 primary conversion would be mandatory for some sections.
