In preparation of the ride my gf and I are taking this summer to visit Moab and attend Bonneville's speed week, we were watching History channels docementary highlighting some of the particapents at Utah's famous salt flats.

Of the several speed records set last year was by a woman on a twin turboed Hayabusa fitted with Dunlpo 616's!!!

Some have described their Uly as handling like a haycart when fitted with 616's. At over 200 mph, I'm assuming that the nature of the salt did not allow her bike to handle as such.

I wonder if Erik and co know if the tire they helped develop played a part in this and maybe other motorcycle speed records at the salt?

This photo was shrunk to fit here, and it is a little too grainy to see the tire tread. There is a better photo at this link:

I can't comment on the tires but we saw the same show and my GF wants to make the trip as well. Last year I rode the S2T out to Moab and had a great time. I stayed in Gateway Colorado at a nice, cheap, resort. Worth the trip. Make sure you let us know when you make the trip and maybe we could meet up.

Sounds like a plan, Skinner. We will definetly be visiting the Moab Brewery while there:

Oh and BTW, all you guys that are more interested in the hot chic on her 'busa than her tires, her name is Leslie Porterfield:

I actually like the Dunlop D616 tires. I've got over 10,000 miles out of my first two rear tires and changed the front tire at 20,000 miles. My 2006 Ulysses handles very well with some extra traction for some off road riding as well.

But I like the girl in the picture on that Busa, even more than I like my D616's! lol

I'm a fan or the 616's too. For the money and tire life they are fine for my use.

There is something about a hot babe setting records on a double-turbo 'busa....

...not gonna make my comments on the girl, this is a family board ; )

I too love my 616s. I haven't noticed any of the "problems" that folks mention - maybe I don't push it as hard? - and I love the fact that I have just enough "knobby" to do some dirt/mud without too many problems. Treadwear is still TBD, my get-off in July has limited me so far, only about 3800 miles on it at this point (bought new in 4/08).

The 616's got a bad reputation from some people, but not me. I liked them. I could roll them to the edge, dragging the Uly pegs on the street and they always stuck. Great in the wet. Did fine on the dirt roads and when I totaled the bike (deer) at about 9300 miles, they still were not worn out.

Unfortunately when I sat on my bike with the 616's it didn't look near as good as that pic above.

I hated the D616's. I got about 2800 out of the rear.

I think the the Uly geometry had much to do with the handling issues, and I'd be winning to bet that they don't show the same characteristics on a Busa.

We have gone to Bonneville and raced a few bikes. Last year we took an 1125r, basically stock, just to see how it performed. Our bagger, a Road Glide with 121cu-in motor, hit 148mph and in certain circles set a record in so doing.

We are committed to race at Pikes Peak again this year. Bonneville will depend on the economy. But if we are there, all Buellers and BWBers especially, are welcomed to hook up with us there.

When I rode on the Salt in 2007, I was impressed with its smoothness and its loose grit at the same time. I was able to break the rear tire loose from cruising speed in 3rd gear on a Road King with my travel gear loaded on it.

Hey Jammer-

It sounds like you are familiar with Bonneville. That would be fun to meet you there.

I got some questions reguarding lodging, camping, weather, spectator viewing and parking. I'm sure you could give me a good idea what to expect.

You got mail. I'd appreciate it if we could talk.

Thanks,
Jerry

PS Pikes Peak is on my short list of events to ride to in the next few years. I have questions......

So Dave, just how did the 1125R perform on the salt?

Bone stock, not even a K&N air filter or tire change, 158mph.

Debueller, hotels in Wendover Utah/Nevada, which is the town close by Bonneville are pretty cheap, may not be during Speedweek but for other samller events theys should be.

You can camp in BLM campsites BUT they are not unimproved so you are really roughing it. I think there is one right near the turn off to the salt flats.

I can't speak for Speedweek but at WOS and I think the Bub meet entry costs are low and spectating is casual. You can't get anywhere near the vehicles at speed but it is still cool to stand out by one of the mile markers and listne as guys go by at 200 mph. The pits and start area are pretty much wide open and most racers are freindly and relaxed EXCEPT of course if they are having issues.

Neat stuff to see and a neat place

I bet you're right. The busa has a wheelbase similar to a limo.

616'S Were great till 2800 miles. Then the rear was wore out & the front was cupped & cause head shakes.BUT..The first 2800 miles were great!Good grip & feel, worked fair in the dirt & great in the rain.
Bonneville is only a few miles. It was probably great for the salt.

I saw that show also and noticed the D616's. I love and I seem to be one of the few.
