I have the Buell Tall Windshield and the standard windshield. I also have the Strada Brackets, and have tried every position with the brackets and both windshields. Nothing was as good as I had hoped for. I got better wind protection(no more eternal pullups), but the helmet booming was bad. I have a large magnetic tank bag, and in the past I have just bungeed it to the triple tail since the magnets don't work on Buell plastic "tanks". Yesterday, I stuck it on the tank (more bungee cords) and went for a ride. I had the Tall Buell Windshield on (no brackets). NO HELMET BOOMING. An incredible difference. Much quieter. My assumption is that the big tank bag prevents air from coming "up" which was what was causing the booming. This also fits with some seat of the pants testing I did, where I just put my left arm across my chest while riding at 80 MPH. This also eliminated a majority of the buffeting. If you have not tried your bigger shield without a large tank bag on, I suggest that you do so. Prior to this Eureka moment, I was considering investing in another big shield, which would most probably not have solved the problem. It wasn't the air coming over the shield, its the air coming around and under the shield which was my problem. | ||

Yeah, I'm 6'3"...definitely time for some research. I don't think the roar is so bad for me (earplugs), but my neck was KILLING me after 150 miles of straight fast riding. | ||

I always ride with a tank bag because it does help keep wind off me. Here is a trick for you glue magnets to the underside of the airbox cover and your bag will magically work!  | ||

I've been trying to come up with a funky airbox fin to try and keep the wind from coming up I'll post some pics when I get them working ok. Right now the keep wanting to rip off. There is alot of wind being deflected up the frame. | ||

I always ride with a tank bag.... Doesn't the bag screw up your airbox cover? I guess if you don't mind scratches you can put a tank bag on it but even though the Uly is an "adventure bike" I'd hate to scratch up my airbox cover. ymmv | ||

I suspect deflectors on the upper fork tubes would be a revelation. Though, they may interfere with steering lock and prove to be fragile. NUTS | ||

There are way too many of variables, here. Case-in-point, my noise level and buffeting changes based on what jacket I'm wearing - its ridiculous, really. . | ||

its ridiculous, really. Perhaps consider a switch to a cage, then. Wind noise doesn't really bother me, but the constant torso-push can get a little tiring after a longer ride (I'm 6'4" with wide shoulders and long arms - I catch a lot of wind). I just scootch back on the seat, lean forward, and tuck in a little bit and it takes care of most of it, or at least puts me in a position where I'm not as "out there" in the wind. I use a Buell tall screen, but I cut the top inch or so off to remove the lip. That did quiet it down significantly, at least for me. | ||

"" You may have missed my point, Ratbuell - all the variables that contribute to buffeting and wind noise, are 'ridiculus' (there's a lot of 'em) - even jackets can effect it... you're on a friggin' bike, so yeah, you're gonna feel the wind, smart-ass. froggy .. glue some magnets to the underside of the airbox cover ... brilliant. read that and had the "why didn't I think of that" feeling. Need a better way to keep my map's and want a small tank bag anyhow .. just about anything beats what I've been doing . taping the maps right to the top of the "tank" .. most times just end up ripping off in the wind anyhow. | ||

As many variables as we can see, any one thought of the Helmet? I use a BMW Enduro, not aprooved by US laws but yes by the european, and having the upper cap or how ever it's called, wind doesent afect me in the least, i did a 400 miles ride with only 2 stops to refuel, and had no problem at all, also noise level compared to the helmets I have, is much lower, well at least thats from my point of view | ||

JB, you are right about the simplest thing affecting the turbulence and buffeting - it can be a frustrating game trying to get rid of it and there is no easy formula. I've found, what is for me, the perfect combination and recently got some new Frank Thomas gear which is excellent. My Arai lid is noisey unless it is sheltered so the addition of a decent screen is critical as I suffer badly from Tinitus. I cannot imagine how I can possibly improve on my setup now for any conditions, distance and speeds. My previous jacket was 3/4 length and would ride-up making the shoulders catch some wind. The new FT jacket is waist length and now much better fitting.  (Message edited by Strada on January 07, 2009) | ||

Dudes - you don't want wind noise, buffeting, you want weather protection - buy a F'n Goldwing; or better yet a Prius. As Johnboy said, you're on a bike - what's more it's a sportbike. Wind, yes! Bring it on. | ||

Aerodynamics is black art! Funny thing is the quietest bike on the highway in terms of wind anyways, was my 1979 sportster with the tach and speedo acting as wind break. My X1 with a flyscreen is aptly named because it seems to funnel insects up the front of my helmet. I don't care much for the wind management on the ULY though. I popped of the stock screen and it was more noisy but didn't jostle my helmet. I can still do more miles in a day with X1 simply because I figured out where the sweet spot is. | ||
