Dr Greg - Whats up ? We havent heard from you in awhile.

Still here.

Hope you're healing well. Can't wait for the new bike saga to continue.

I'm healing, I guess. My poor old (61 YO) body just got run through the mill. I see surgeon tomorrow (splint off?) so after that I'll have a better idea.

Still in pain (shoulder, arm, rib, back, thumb...body) but mostly sleeping through the night. Sure glad this is Christmas break and I have flexible schedule...

No news on the local '06 Uly; I wonder if insurance company is closed from Christmas--New Year. Dunno.

However, I have started replacing gear:

• Shoei Hornet DS on order...LOVE that helmet...
• FirstGear Kilimanjaro 4 jacket (size M) just purchased...
• Ditto on FG HT 2 overpants (size 32)
• Will order TourMaster Winter Elite gloves on Jan 2 (coupon)

The above gear is what I was wearing: I liked it and it did its job.

For Christmas I got:

• New clicker torque wrenches (old one died during previous wrenching)
• Symtec heated grips
• Motorcycle dynamics book (for engineers & physicists only)

So...I'm ready to ROCK 'N ROLL!! Just get this stupid body to heal. There are SO MANY places I'd like to ride...just wait till I get my house paid off (1-2 years); then I'll quit summer robotics research and see the USA on my good ol' 06 Uly. Still the best bike ever.

If I get my splint off tomorrow (I hope I hope) I'll take a few pics for y'all.

Sure wish I'd hear from the insurance company so I can start negotiating on '06 Uly #564.

Boy, with my splint off and #564 in the garage I could start havin' some fun!

My gut feeling is no riding for 2-3 months. Sigh.

Hey Doc,
Can I have your old gear? (Jacket, pants, and gloves)

Get a good therapist that can get you stretched back out.

Sleeping through the night is a big step - it took me *months* to get there. I'm finally at the point where I can roll over at night, and don't have to wake up to make sure it isn't hurting something.

Good luck on losing the splint. I felt pretty good when I was starting to move around again, but still had the torso brace (TLSO) on. Once they took that thing off....WOW, what a difference. Once it comes off, the only limitation is your pain threshold. Judging by the soreness I have on the "day after", I'm pushing things....but damn, I'm getting my life back!

Glad to hear you're doing so well. You'll ride soon enough, don't worry. I'm pulling for you to go orange ; )

Good news for Doc & Rat - Trend lines in right direction. If this keeps up we're going to need a thread titled "BWB recovery ward" - I was in it last year. Doc - Insurance co is overly dilatory in providing 'service' - using the term loosely. St Farm had me an answer 2 days after estimate completed. Your agent needs to start intervention with co. mother ship. Thanks for update - keep healing. j

Just in case, don't forget to claim all your damaged riding gear with the insurance company. All that stuff should get replacement cost too.

Saw my surgeon yesterday; she said I'm lookin' good! My left wrist is very well aligned; the only problem is that the fracture affected the joint: this may make arthritis more likely in the future. BFD.

As I figured, no riding for three months. Perfect! Just in time for another Tour de Texas or the like. Or maybe a shorter ride.

X-Rays!! Thought you might like to see a couple X-rays. Below you can see the pre-existing plates on my radius and ulna (forearm), and the tip of the humerus (upper arm) plate (biggest plate they could get in there; they had to do that surgery twice).

My left arm was already full of metal...also, there is a recent fracture of the ulna (right bone) near the bottom of its plate. Never knew about that one...oops.

Then below is the new plate on the distal end of the radius. It's a pretty cool shape! Good thing they had one in stock...

Man, look at all the screws in my lower arm! A walking hardware store.

But I got my splint off, now just have a removable brace...I can type with two hands again! Woo-hoo!

Gonna leave in a few minutes to go negotiate with the dealer; they wanna sell that '06 Uly this year. We'll see.

DOC-

Always nice to see what people are made of... hahaha....

Those old plates look really old.... they don't have any of the contours the new one do...

Did any of the old plates bother you???

Arthritis ... I think looking at your x-rays you were probably a prime candidate prior to this.... sooooo...

Glad you got the splint off, just remember to do what the MD says for 3 months .. big picture it ain't really that long...

Hope you pull the wool over their eyes on the ULY.... and if not them the insurance co. for sure.... anyway.....

Cheers-pete

Well, just got back from dealer; they won't budge AN INCH on their $6923 price. So I walked out. Again.

And to make it worse, they sold another '06 while I was there to someone else for $5,900. Screw 'em. That's how they treat returning customers.

Time to start lookin' at BMW GS'es. This time I'm serious.

Effing dealers.

Dr. Greg,

If you are serious about BMW's ask for Jim Johnson and tell him you are a friend of mine and looking for a deal. Great guy to know in many aspects. You guys actually remind me of each other in a few ways.

Dr. Greg - man, your x-rays look like my legs! Although, I don't have external plates...they actually ran Ti rods through my marrow so the bones would fuse back around them. I didn't dislocate (femur and tib/fib) as much as I just shattered 'em in place. Ever see a femur in nearly 15 pieces? I gotta find my films so I can post 'em....

Sucks on the '06, and the dealer. Sorry to hear about it, I know you liked that bike. Let me try and work some magic Friday when I'm back at work - see if they'll trade my '06 orange in on the '09 XP we have in back, LOL.

Dr. Greg, I'm with you. Those guys in ABQ won't be getting more of my $$ either. Prior to buying the Uly in Oct, I stopped by the BMW place. The cars guys sucked, the bike guys were OK.

Well, Whoratio, sometimes one just oughta bite one's tongue. Just got back from the dealer and I'm (once again) the proud owner of a 2006 Buell Ulysses, this time in Barricade Orange!

Even in corporation-owned dealerships (like ABQ) you can still find some good guys. I've known one for a long time up there and he went to bat for me. We worked out a deal with which I'm very happy.

This '06 is basically stock, has 9,900 miles, has had the latest wheel bearings installed, new belt, spark plugs, etc. Pretty much everything for the 10K service except the fork oil And I love doing the forks. Really. And it started out as the dealership's former owner's personal bike. I was right behind him when he crashed on AZ 191 in August 2005. It has been meticulously maintained since then. And, of course, in my hands it will continue to be so.

Unfortunately the BAS recall had not yet been done, so they'll have to do that before I can take possession. And the BAS parts aren't in stock, so... However, I'm not going be riding for three months, although I'll certainly be wrenching on it before then. So I can wait a couple weeks.

Bottom line...Dr. Greg will once again be on his beloved '06 Uly! And since I'll be buying my old bike back I'll be fitting the stock '06 all-black seat (my color and comfort preference, even at 5-9) in place of the low orange seat. It'll be nice having S/N 044 as a "parts" bike, and S/N 564 as the "riding" bike.

I'm happy again. Boy, oh boy, it's been an up-and-down last three months. I'll post beaucoup pics when I get the new bike home.

And thanks for all the purchasing suggestions.

Maybe I missed it but where is the story with the insurance co. and the old one.... last I read you were waiting for them to call you... by the estimate I am guessing it was totaled... never have figured that out how the rebuy option works...

Wonderfull!! Appears Santa delivered, allbeit a smidge tardy. I assume you got the Insurance co verdict on "the deer slayer" ? Now you got something to use up all that "spare" time while you heal. Are you buying the remains of the previous Uly ? Happy New Year Doc ! j

Good deal!! You got all the wearout parts fresh!! That thing has a good 30,000 miles before you have to think preventive maintenance again. With black and orange parts you can change your colors depending on the seasons, orange for the spring and summer and then wear black all winter long.
At least you now have something to keep you focused for the next riding season. Or do you???? Retrograde projects of 044 to 564 will be a good time.

BTW I'm in need of a very well documented shock service thread!!! Have all the parts coming but still intimidated by them. It looks easy but I'm sure I can dork them up.

Yes, the insurance company totaled #044. Their proposed payout was actually pretty good IMHO, but I'm holding out for more. I don't need the cash immediately, so I can afford to "hold their feet to the fire."

Sadly, after being told by one claims adjuster that all my riding gear would be covered, I was informed by the local claims person that only my helmet would be covered, not the additional $500 in gear that got destroyed (he says they changed their policy a couple years ago). I said I was told some time ago by my local agent that the company tries "to put you in the same condition you were in five minutes before the accident." He said that now only applies to the bike plus helmet.

I think that sucks. I'll work on them as much as possible.

Also, I'm going to see if the dealer will "release" #564 to me to put in my garage now, then bring it back up when they get the BAS parts in stock. It will be excellent therapy for me to just be able to go out and LOOK at my new Uly.

Finally, it was 49F, sunny, and calm in New Mexico today, so I went for a 2.5-mile walk. Boy, did it feel good to be outside doing something again. It was a little funny; I felt good but my sense of balance seemed a little off. Probably a good thing that I won't be riding until mid-March.

And yes, I'm buying #044 back; lotsa good parts on it.

Dr. Greg

I've been lurking in the threads about your rebuild and unfortunately your wreck but haven't posted yet. Thank you for sharing, better reading than any of car or bike magazines I read.

Sorry to hear about you wreck. Glad your doing at least relativity well. It will feel like forever but you will be back and riding in no time.

Congrat's on the replacement ULY for a brief moment I thought I might be in the running for the most miles on a 06 ULY .. If were starting from today. I only have 7000 or so on mine. Then I thought your shakedown run of 500 some miles is about the same as my longest MC trip so far. I have a way's to go but the good news is .. it's all on the ULY and I'll enjoy every minute of it.

Once you have the old bike back are you going to put the blue headers on the new ULY ?

Thank You and a Happy New Year to you and your family.
