Yes I searched, no I didn't find my answer so please tell me a couple things. My belt snapped today at 5,500 miles on my 06. So I called the nearest dealer from the roadside, and of course they didn't have one in stock, but he did mention something about an upgrade. What is the upgraded belt? Is it stock on an 08 or 09? And then in my searches I thought I saw something about the new one being way too tight and never stretching, causing wheel bearing failure. So do I want the upgraded one? And out of curiousity, since I have such few miles, if my bike was still under factory warranty, would they have covered this?

If your bike is still under warranty it should be covered. The 'upgraded' belt you speak of is standard on the 09 models. As far as wheel bearing failures, there is endless speculation about the cause of this-too much tension on the belt due to the Uly's suspension travel, water contamination, etc. No one REALLY seems to know why the bearings go bad. 5500 miles seems a bit soon for belt failure, but stranger things have happened. Have the dealer fix it under warranty if you still have it. Hope this helps.

If the bike is under warranty, the belt will be covered. There is no upgrade..persay...but Buell introduced a new and improved belt this past year. Anyone who buys a belt will get the new version as the older version is obsolete. Belts will stretch over time, so don't worry about that. Mine broke at 25,000...others have lasted over 50,000 miles so there may be too many variables to consider when calculating how long they will last. In your case it sounds like the bike has been sitting around somewhere too long...maybe on the showroom floor, or maybe in a cold garage. I always keep an extra belt on hand because you never know when they might fail...and I don't want to be out of action while I wait for a backorder to be filled.

The part number for the 'new' belt is G0500.1AKE (original is G0500.1AKD).

My belt half-way melted when I dropped it in the mud and the silt caused it to over heat. It still held up fine and I later replaced it as a precautionary measure. If I remember right the bike had between 15000-20000 miles at the time. I just wish the dealer hadn't cut it taking it off, then I could have used it as a spare in an emergency.

No one REALLY seems to know why the bearings go bad.

It was stated at Homecoming 2008 that Buell had determined the wheel bearing failures are caused by contamination (water, dust, etc.) getting past the seals. They have come out with upgraded wheel bearings with improved seals as a result.

IIRC the "new" belt is at least the 2nd upgraded belt since the Ulysses was introduced.
