Well, I was due a Uly upgrade as it has been several months since my last project. So about a month ago I caught wind of a big "Black Friday" sale (but it was actually Saturday) at one of the local Buell dealers. So I ordered these items:




I had been battling the 'ole front brake pulsating for some time now, and although some people have reported dealers replacing rotors under warranty, mine did not seem willing to do this. I was going to replace my rotor at my expense, so I figured at the seasonal sale prices I could upgrade the whole front brake system for just a little more than I had planned to spend anyway.




It was pretty much a straight forward process of just swapping components...but there were a couple snags. The first one was that the brake level micro switch on the new master cylinder assembly was made for a different sized connector from the one that was on my 2006 Uly. I don’t know what year they changed, but I just swapped out the new for the old…and all was good!




The second issue was figuring out how to properly fill the empty brake lines and bleed the system. After a quick search on BadWeb I found a thread in the Knowledge Vault that helped me figure out a good way to take care of this. I used a syringe from my fork oil leveling kit...then I found a piece of rubber tubing to connect the syringe to the caliper bleed valve. Then I pumped the brake fluid up to fill the system and force the air out the top.




After the first test ride the brakes were still pretty soft, so the next day I pumped the brake lever a little more to force some additional air out through the caliper bleed valve. After that the brakes seemed to feel great.




With the streets not a clean as I would like to see them, my testing of the new ZTL2 system did not include any hard braking...but with normal braking the new system seemed very smooth and predictable. Obviously they are much better when compared to the pulsating brakes I have been dealing with for a while, but if I remember correctly when my Uly was new, the brakes seem to be more progressive and less grabby. Maybe not a huge difference for normal riding, but I do like the feel. Since I finished the work this week...I have decided to just call this my Christmas present to me!

Were mods necessary to get your hand-guards back on? What did you use for brake pads?

No mods on the hand guards.

Brake pads came with the caliper.

Everything you need is contained in the items in the first picture above, except you don't need the rotor kit if yours is still working fine.
