Yes, 2008 model fuel mileage issues again.

Early on, I was averaging in the 43 mpg range. After the ECU program update (July) at about 4.5 k miles, economy increased to the 47 to 48 range. Since October, at 7.7 k miles, fuel consumption has been down to 42 -43 mpg. Steady for the past five or six tanks.

Yes, gasoline formulation is different in the winter, it results in lower numbers. My car went from 35 to 30mpg

We just had a Bad Webber bring his 08 Uly up from Co Sprgs for some service work and he shared his poor fuel economy numbers with me. My 2007 has been known to get 60+ on pure highway <80mph riding. He can't recall hitting over 50mpg. We checked, there was a download update for his ECM which we collectively discussed not knowing the finer details of the differences, but that you can't go back a rev. and he decided to have us download it.

I specifically asked him to let us know how that went since others may very well be of this same school. Of course Sat was near 60deg., last night it was minus -15 degrees, so it may be a while to learn of any operational or performance differences.

I will let you know if we hear anything.

Hey Jammer,
Not to hijack this thread but re: gas mileage, my dealer swears that there's no ecm reflash for my 08XT. As Colorado is next door to Kansas where I live, where are you and if I came to your dealership this spring or summer could/would you see if there is a reflash for mine?
Thanks.

"Really good to have met you today, and the rest of the team at High Country. I was very impressed with the Buell emphasis that I saw. I will certainly be back. Looks like the guys in the shop did a good job.

FYI, I made 49.31 mpg on the way home. It is too early to tell, but I think that is an improvement. I spent a lot of time maintaining 80 mph in a pretty strong head wind. So I would estimate that the mileage will be better. I’ll see what it averages in the coming days and will keep you informed.

Thanks again. I hope that we can ride together one of these days."

Send me an e-mail via private message with your VIN number or call me, 303.833.6777 and I'll do a look up.

Kansas, yeah, not that far. A group of us have been known to ride over to Ulysses, KS after work just for the photo opp!

Here is a Sat night thru Monday evening's adventure, to Ulysses Kansas, on, a Buell Ulysses, but of course. It was only April this year, so got pretty cold at night, ride home over Monument Hill proved sticky, as in white stuff on the face shields. But, after all, what's 1,000 miles riding through Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Kansas, on pavement, gravel, dirt, snow, all for a picture, if not an adventure?
And we be the culture of Ulysses.

Oops, open mouth, insert Sidi riding boot.

Let me take that back about the VIN no. I went to service and talked to one of our resident Buell Master Techs. Seems you have to connect to the Digital Technician and do an ECM reflash, then you get a ECM version number. There is no cost for this, any cooperative service department can do it. From there, any updates available can be identified.

Did your dealer have the bike in service when he said that there were no ECM reflashes for your bike? Without it hooked up to the digital tech, I am not sure he could know. If it was, then that might be what he was saying, that your ECM is loaded with the latest. We give a print out to the customer and it has the version number on it.

I have an '07 Uly, with just under 25,000 miles, always running the side bags (no top box), and my commuter gas mileage is now consistent at 37 mpg.
I have seen up to 48mpg in the NC mountains, but that was my best ever, last year.
I used to get 39-40 mpg, and it slowly improved to 42, but it was definitely running hotter. The dealer made some adjustments to have it run richer, but with the mileage drop, I had them re-adjust things. Supposedly reset to all stock settings, but no change on the mileage.
The dealer is no longer carrying Buell, and my closest dealer is now 80 miles away.

Any advice here, Jammin ?

Mark,

I've recently had a drop of 5 mpg or so. I wonder if there is a correlation to the winter gas in Phoenix.

Here in VA, I am used to at least a 10% drop in mileage when the stations go to a winter blend. The deeper into winter, the more my fuel mileage drops, because I let everything warm up longer, and the rides tend to be shorter.

I wondered about that, it was actually my first thought. My BMW though('82 R100rs), seems to be maintaining pretty constant mileage.

Maybe the FI is being confused by the change in winter fuel's oxygen content. The carbureted BMW would continue to meter fuel by volume, and not react to changes in chemistry.

I have experienced poorer mileage since the pumps here have gone to 10% ethanol.

Based on my experience, you'll see a drop in mpg once the temperatures start to drop. Whether that is due to different gas formulations, shorter rides, letting the bike warm up longer, air temperature, etc. beats me.

Combo of all the above, but mostly the different formula of gas.

Same gas here, so that's not the case for me. My other bikes don't show any mileage drop.

It's around 80 degrees today.
