My 06 Uly with 32K miles is running great but has become somewhat hesitant to start lately. It cranks fine, has no codes in the ECM but takes several revolutions before starting. Mostly stock except for the factory race ECM, Factory race muffler, Filter and modded air box. I just replaced the plugs and wires and cleaned the air filter but they had no effect on the cold starting. It stays in the garage and it's never below 60F.

I'm thinking maybe the cold start inrichment is not working but I'm not sure how to check that with VDSTS.

Start with a TPS reset and then reset the AFV. No matter what you might think it is you have to start from scratch.

but I'm not sure how to check that with VDSTS.

Why don't you use the software provided with your ECM? The current version supports setting the startup enrichment as well as adjustung the cold start enrichment.

My '06 (36K) with similar set up had the same issue and it was much more evident as the weather got colder. Still had the original battery... replaced the battery and the starting hesitation went away.

Now that I finished my coffee.. looks like a slightly different issue.

I also had some issues with it having to turn over more than usual. (again when it got colder). I adjusted my throttle cable, reset my TPS and AFV.. had to bump up my idle (had it down around 900-950) a bit.

Mine (06, stock ECM, drummer, modded inner airbox) cranks a little longer in the cold. Cold, like below 40. I chalk it up to the bike giving me one last chance to be smart and take the Jeep ("are you SURE you want to take me out when it's this cold?"), lol. Once it starts from cold, it restarts all day long (yesterday, for example - errand runs in 34 degree weather) quickly and with no hiccups. My cars and trucks do the same thing in the cold.

Id073897 Just curious but what is the software provided with the ecm? I don't remember getting any software with my ecm other then what is already programmed in. I can't access that with out ecm spy. I know of no other way. But if there is I would love to know. Thanks for peaking my interest some more!!!

I would check for an intake manifold leak. One way to check is to raise your idle up a little at a time till it does start. Once running quickly set your idle to 1000 and go for a ride. If your warm idle has changed, like 1300 or something, then your manifold is leaking. Pull your scoop off the left side and the cover off the right side and spray some brake cleaner around the intake to the head. If your idle changes at all, it's leaking. Recommend Genuine James blue silicone intake seals. Stock Harley/Buell's suck.

My Uly had the slow start thing begin around 12,000 miles. I had the battery replace around 15,000 miles (which seemed to fix the problem), but within two days it was once again starting slow. The problem turned out to be my stator. Now I'm around 35,000 miles and the slow starting issue has not reappeared.

Try a new battery. It made a world of difference when I switched mine out.

Tootal I have installed those seals and mine still has trouble when cold starting.
I might replace the battery in the spring since its the orginal 06. The stator issue from Max seems like something to look into.

I had replaced my stator and VR about a month ago....it still started the same way. New battery.. TPS reset etc... much better now.

Hey everybody,

Thanks for the tips on things to ckeck out but I think I need to clarify the symptom a little better.

First: The starting circuit is fine. I have a new battery and the starter cranks the engine at full cranking speed immediately upon pressing the button.

Second: I have done the TPS reset after the engine has been fully warmed up.

Third: I have replaced the spark plugs and the spark plug wires as well as cleaning the air filter.

Fourth: The condition of taking longer than normal to start happens regardless of ambient temperatures but only after the engine cools off and sits for a while like several hours.

There is no provision to adjust the cold-start enrichment with this ECM or any stock or race ECM of those prior to the 2008 models that I know of. It may be possible to with re-mapping via ECMSPY but I do not have a laptop nor do I have ECMSPY. I do have VDSTS running on a pocket PC but it cannot re-map the ECM.

The suggestion to check for a manifold leak is a good one so that's what I'll do as soon as I can get off my arse and do it.

Keep up the good work here and post up if you have had the same symptoms and figured out what the cause was. I'll post when I figure it out if I ever do. It's only an annoyance but doesn't seem to be causing any other performance related problems.
