Man I tried to order some, but it looks like they don't ship APO. I'll have to call them when I get back in town next week.

I used the split loom. Installed the Garmin Zumo power cable from the fairing back to the battery, the antenna (from the 550 mounting to the tail section) and some spare #12 Str. THHN from the battery to the fairing to use for the horn and the aux lighting.

I laid the entire thing up so that things "popped out" where they belonged. Once I had the entire harness made up, I wrapped it in two layers of Bulldog friction tape and two half-wrap layers of Scotch® Premium Vinyl Electrical Tape 88-Super.

The split loom is rated for 200oF and I routed it along between the head and the frame. I'd put one wire in there temporarily without protection and, when I removed it to install my new harness, noted that it had worn through in less than 400 miles.

Accordingly I put physical as well as thermal protection on my list for things I hoped to accomplish.

Keith if you are needing wire loom sent, let me know . . I have enough left over and have 4 "Buell shipments" going tomorrow and will send some your way.

Anybody know where to score some of that nice woven wire protector stuff online?

This is what I used.

Phew, spendy stuff huh. I will go with the hockey tape I think. First a wrap of quality electrical tape and then a good layer of hockey tape. That is what buell seems to use as alot of their wiring wrap anyways.}

Court, Froggy, thanks for the offers. I was actually talking about the HID kits. I ended up registering with a forwarding service www.shipitapo.com which a buddy recommended to me.
I also decided I wanted name brand stuff so I dropped the coin on xenondepot's all philips kit which looks to have a nice prebuilt wiring harness with relay wired in. It was pricey but saves me the hassle of having to order everything separate and will give me better piece of mind while traveling.

Is there an issue regarding the OEM headlamps and their use with HID? And, does anyone know if the Buell’s sold in Europe have different headlamps?

""Is there an issue regarding the OEM headlamps and their use with HID?""

In short, many OEM housings will scatter the light with an HID conversion bulb installed, since the housing was not designed for an HID bulb.

In terms of melting? They are fine, most HID kits are 35W, while the stock bulbs are 55W, so there is less heat and power consumption. I ordered a 50W kit. As for light distribution, projection style setups do better than our setups, but ours are fine with it. Yes the European's have a slightly different headlamps. I think its the reflectors are different.

""I think its the reflectors are different.""

E-code headlamp have a sharper cut-off than D.O.T. spec lamps.... D.O.T. requires, that some light be scattered upward to light highway signs.

I have run a lot of E-code headlamps in my vehicles over the years, and have never had trouble reading road signs. E-codes are much kinder to oncoming traffic as well, and, in my opinion, produce a brighter, sharper light for the driver.

Since D.O.T. requires that some light be scattered, when additional light (e.g., HID ) is introduced into the equation, more light is scattered into the eyes of oncoming drivers, as well.

Not a good thing.

I am not going to run HID conversions in my low beam, just the high, for that reason.

My neighbor's kid has an older Acura of some type and I can tell he has the really blue HID conversions - they are absolutely blinding at night.

You mean the Euro running light?

It's just a 194 wedge-base bulb.

Another option to get a brighter high-beam is to use the Osram / Sylvania Hyper - 65W - H7 Bulb.

Ouch, bad news, I started installing my kit, and i noticed a good chunk of the reflective material is missing on my headlamps. about 20% of the low beam and a little of the high. Looks like my 55w PIAA bulbs did it in somehow.

Is there a part number for the reflectors instead of getting the whole assembly?

Figured I might as well get the European one as it scatters light better.

Anyone tried ordering a replacement lamp yet? Mine are working fine - but since I can't walk into Pep Boys and pick up a replacement I'm thinking about ordering one for back-up

Froggy,
When I installed my HID's I noticed I had the same issue on the low beam side, almost looks like it had flecked off or burned off.

I only had the stock H7 in there until I installed the HID's

Yea I was wondering that, as its the same wattage as the stockers, so the temperature difference should be minimal. Oh well, at least our headlights aren't catching fire! : )

IIRC this was one of the reasons given for not having both headlights on with high beam in stock configuration. Would heat from both headlights generate enough heat to cause the reflective material to separate from the housing?

Froggy,
I got the single beam 55W on low. I'm going to have to get a matching 55W for the Hi now as the silverstar halogen is so dim compared to it. A great mod for sure. Now to figure out how I'm going to get a Strebel installed!

Hey Mr Medic and others,
I have a question about the silver stars. Are they a direct replacement for the stock ones? Where can you find them and do you have the part numbers? Sorry to side track the HID topic, I would like some brighter than stock lights but I don't have the capability of doing the HID for a while.

Thanks
Greenman

Hey thanks Armymedic,
Are those lights brighter than stock ones?
Also how is the riding out there in Utah? That is where I come from, but didn't have my bike when I left this spring. Have ya found any good roads to cruse on? Maybe you could let me in on their location if you have.

Thanks again for your help

Definitely brighter than stock. 1/2 the price on eBay. Riding out here is great but I just got my Uly a month ago and haven't been able to ride all the great roads East and South of SLC. Canyonchasers.net has good maps of the best roads in Utah. Can't wait til Spring to hit them!
