Harley-Davidson has released for presale through US dealers the XR1200. Most noteably it has 90hp, restricted from XB12 output most likely by the lack of a true Helmholtz airbox (due to traditional peanut tank styling) and a more pan-Euro header and muffler style than our extremely tuned XB12 system, again, traditional style being a more major requirement than in East Troy. But there is a take-away. The motor utilizes "precision-cooled cylinder heads and large capacity oil cooler" which some have speculated to be a water cooled Sportster. This oil-head design is similar to a BMW head feature. With our Uly heat issue, to me, this seems a feature just begging to be executed on the Buell line, especially the Uly. 'Some' are glaringly misinformed. Hell my Buell CityX has an oil cooler and advanced precision cooled finned cylinders. You are sitting ontop of an engine, with 100hp its gonna be warm to say the least. | ||

The heads are oil cooled with a system of external oil lines to the cooler. Erik Buell doesn't need to listen to HD... Rather, HD seems to have been listening to Erik Buell, since many Buell ideas have shown up on the XR. | ||

" When the XR1200 started being seen, written about and ridden in Europe, scant blurbs on internet forums specualted the external lines to the head, the large oil cooler, and word-of-mouth details were hiding that the bike was a water cooled motor, or even v-rod based. This phenomenon just goes to show you that data gleaned from the WEB should be taken with a grain of salt. ~jammer | ||

Its on the interweb so it must be true  Heres the pic I got in 2007  Looks air cooled to me. But then I am familiar with an external oil cooler off the left side of a bike | ||

HD wanted to sell the bike in the US but had to clear up a trademark deal with Storz first...that got done this summer. June 17, 2008 Storz Performance, Inc. announced that Harley-Davidson, Inc. has reached agreement with Storz Performance, Inc. of Ventura, CA to acquire Storz’ trademark rights for the mark “XR 1200” (U.S. Trademark application No.77/048680). Specific terms of the agreement are confidential. Storz Performance introduced its XR 1200 dirt track style conversion kits for Sportster motorcycles in January of 2005. NOTE: The trademark sale to H-D was for the name "XR 1200" only. |
