How bad it kill top end? I don't do much interstate riding and usually not much of anything over 70mph. I've been thinking about converting my 06 but I was afraid it would screaming at highway speeds.

I always thought the perfect setup would be having the XB9 primary gearing combined with a six speed (if there were such a thing). The end effect would be about the same high gear as stock with the extra gear added to the bottom.

I've been running 75 to 80 in fourth and it is just about 4500 rpm, if I remember right.

No problem on the highway. It is doing around 4k at 120kmh(75mph). That is good cruising speed. Nice and smooth and great passing power. : )

Curious how your mileage changes. I've been considering the same change, but I love my beat-on-me-and-I'll-still-give-you-45mpg-around-to wn mileage!

""No problem on the highway. It is doing around 4k at 120kmh(75mph). That is good cruising speed. Nice and smooth and great passing power. ""

I typically run my standard-geared '07 in 4th gear on the freeways. I usually cruise around 70-75mph (indicated) and like the 4th gear response at that speed - it seems too sluggish to me in 5th gear.

Good acceleration is as important to me as good brakes, for avoiding trouble.

If you don't plan on running over 120, it won't be a problem. : )

A quick way to estimate the effects of this change is to run the bike in 4th instead of 5th gear. The throttle response is much better, and the mileage often goes UP. Once I did this experiment, I quit using 5th gear.

Where this mod really makes the most difference is at low speeds, when you're in 1st gear, and can't downshift. It makes the Uly usable at 10 mph, whereas before that was extraordinarily jerky. Above that you can get the same effect by just shifting later.

FWIW, I think the shift points in the manual are way too low. I suspect there are legal reason for this, probably to meet EPA noise requirements. If you keep it spinning around 4k rpm, it's much more fun to ride, and the mileage is at least as good.

Yep...you gotta spin the motor up.

This motor doesn't reach peak power until just before redline.

9 primary, among other mods, is how we raced a XB12STT up Pikes Peak this year in Race to the Clouds. Took second, first Buell ever, only behind a more powered Ducati. Something we plan on rectifying in 2009.

WOW, I've been on the XB board asking for the best way to get more acceleration , and the suggestion was to do a XB9 Primary conversion on my XB12s. Can someone tell me what it requires? Is it doable at home (I am not a master mechanic, but can usually do most work myself). How much are the parts from Buell or other sources.

Just joined that forum today...and already learn do much!! That's after 4 + years on the XB!

Cheers, Frederic

You can buy the parts separately from your dealer or as a kit from American Sportbike:

Too bad you can't just buy a rear sprocket and modify the belt tensioner.

Ah, another XB9 primary lover.

For any still on the fence about this mod, get over here and just do it. I have yet to hear of anyone that has done the swap that has any thoughts about going back the other way.

The mod can be handled by anybody that knows one end of a wrench from the other and can read a service manual. BTW, order a factory service manual when you order the parts for the swap.

I'm seriously considering this. I've got to get into the primary to replace the clutch anyway. Might as well swap out the primary chain while I'm in there.

It would be nice to have more go-go drive coming out of turns. I don't hit 120 often, but I do hit it occasionally.

The Nashville track day would suck, but chances are that I couldn't hit more than 120 on the track anyway (mumbles grumpilly about wind resistance and giant cross sections : |).

I think U4euh did the conversion and wants to go back, but he's the only one I've heard who didn't like it.

I think it's because he wants to go more than 120.

I've been wanting to do this for a long time and you guys finally convinced me to get off my keester. I just ordered the kit along with the K&N air filter and some lyndall gold pads. That ought to keep me busy during the cold days ahead! Thanks for all the positive feedback.

Had Bob at Long Branch HD do the install when I brought in the bike in for the recall.
Only drove about 20 miles but bike feels more zippy and more in the power curve.
More responsive to throttle.
And first feels more like first.

So far I am very happy!

I am planning on doing this mod over the winter. Looks like a short afternoon project.

The other mod is a custom seat. Just gotta decide who to send it to.

Do you have the locking tool?

My procedure:

I used a 17" breaker bar and stood on the end of it. It didn't have any problems turning the nut on my 06, which had a much higher torque spec than the 08s. It helps to have someone to hold the bike while you do this. If you don't have a breaker bar, a pipe over the end of your socket wrench should work.

i assume you have a lock-bar securing the sprocket...

on my 08, i just used my foot on a two foot breaker bar... the weight of my 220 pound butt, readilly broke it loose..
dont forget that the clutch side bolt is reverse thread..
