I posted this question in the Knowledge Vault a few days ago and didn't get a single response. I'm hoping there may be some info available from this board. As documented elsewhere, I took a tumble that included sliding for an unknown distance (perhaps 66 feet at an average of 4 mph according to my GPS track). The Hepco-Becker side case did a wonderful job of minimizing damage to the bike and, to some extent, injuries to me. I would like to patch the area that slid because it is now MUCH thinner than the surrounding area. Maybe even put some sheet metal under the patch. What product or products would be suitable for this? Of course, I would like something that is close to color matched but I would paint it for the right product. | ||

Can you buy a new cover for it? I know when my Triumph took a little nap in a parking lot at about 5mph...... I was able to order just the lid for the side case and pop rivet it back together. Might be something to look into. | ||

Rino liner? Pliable and will stick well to the case. Might want to do the whole case and chose a color. If you stick with black maybe a local guy will spray just the damaged area for free after he does a big job? | ||

Thanks for all of the ideas. Keep 'em coming. BTW, Court is on a private "rescue mission" as we speak. If it doesn't pan out, I will be looking for the best idea. | ||

Just went and looked at mine and if you can find/order just the top the change out job should take about 30 seconds. | ||

I went down on my right side case. Was going to replace both sides with Pelican cases, but decided to try and clean it up. I ground it down with a 4" grinder and sanded it. Then I painted it with Krylon "hammered" paint.(black) It came out pretty good. I painted the other side to match, topcase too! Lost its newness, but every thing does! | ||

There are different types of epoxy, some for plastic some for metal. I'm not sure if you can mix in colors or not. | ||

It probably looked something like this:  I went down at about 55mph, and this is all that happened - fantastic! Hell, my Olympia coat slid further than this bag (I think)! You can see the long, melted plastic snurds dangling from the front - ground off in the slide. Insurance got me a new box, but if I were to rehab it, I'd sand it lightly and slather on some sort of epoxy to seal up where it's thin, then paint it. Right now, it's just a reminder of how lucky I was/am. Hope you came out of that 100%, Gotj. Here's what happened to my opponent:  | ||

Hooper, Yeah, mine looks a lot like yours except I didn't get so high up on the side - no damage to the upper silver trim piece. I'm still rehabing but don't think I'll get to 100% because the rib cage was pushed in about 1/2". Still have to get the lung re-inflated too. | ||

How big were your snurds ? I bet if you had a bunch of big snurds you could just glue them on with snurd-tack and you'd be good to go. I bet Hooper would be more than happy to part with a snurd or two. Sorry boys I just gotta keep using the snurd wurd, I can't help it. Feel better Gotj. | ||

Alright, Skinstains...(ha ha...) Anyone remember "Sniglets"? Rich Hall? "Snerds" were "the bits of paper that come off a spiral notebook when you tear off a page". "Optigook" is the weird slime that gathers in the corners of your eyes. The "grackle" is the metal ball inside a can of spray paint. Good memories. Revenge of the Snurds! | ||

I would do a combination: trim off snurds  lightly sand the scraped area, put some JB Weld on the inside at the site of the deepest scrape (probably the front corner?) then immediately press a piece of fiberglass cloth, (woven, not batt) into the JB weld so it's good and stuck. When it cures, cover it with a bit more JB to smooth it out and fully contain the 'glass. On the outside, mask off the lower portion, clean it with alcohol, spray it with bedliner (rhino or similar). Do the other side to match. May look even better than new! after all, what do you have to lose? | ||

I have a similar problem with my left side case. I checked with the dealer, they didn't show a part number for just the outer case. I checked the H-B website, they have parts lists so I sent an email. Their reply was that I need to get replacement parts through the Buell dealer. Anybody have pictures of the bags sprayed with bedliner? | ||

When dealing with HB, don't even mention they are Buell OEM cases, just mention you need replacement parts for the Journey panniers and ask them where you can get them. They will probably refer you to the distributor in your local area. Wayne | ||

Picked up a well used airbox cover, had it sprayed with rhino lining so on long trips I don't have to worry about scratching the original with the tank bag. Like it so well also did the beaver tail grab rails and bottom and inside of the happy trails. I wouldn't hesitate to do mine again, very functional. IF you can live with the look. | ||

The only place I have found in the US with a comprehensive parts list for the H-B bags is Eurotech Motorsports Twisted Throttle use to distribute for Eurotech. But, I'm not sure they do anymore. I couldn't even find any HB bags on the TT site recently. Wayne | ||

Sekalilgai, I'm not sure I understand your question about the hinge pins. Also, I don't remember what happened to your side case. I DID take a good blow to the head recently so I'll blame it on that. Healing: the bones and therapy are going quite well. The lung, not so much. In the x-rays, it looks like a day-old party balloon and doesn't seem to be getting significantly better over time. The doc is still in a wait-and-see mode which I like for now. Thanks for asking. George | ||

Yep, just dropped them off and ask them to put a light smooth coat on after the next big job. Not beautiful for sure but very functional; no hassle trying to keep the cover pristine with a tank bag installed. When out for show just install the original in 5 min or less. | ||

George My bags are putting up with my abuse ok but I have access to a vac forming machine...catch is it has about a 7 inch travel on the platen...the bag covers, by themselves would fit (being lazy and not wanting to work on a plug) but require some disassembly...hence the weird question. I'll keep fingers crossed on your health...it sucks to have a bike break, even worse with the body. I just had my left knee 'tweaked' but on the plus side...I know have some idea of how to use crutches.... Ken |
