I'm facing the possibility of having to store the Uly outside for the winter (in DC) and I wanted to hear from our neighbors to the north (say Minnesota) about the risks of storing and starting in cold weather. Is it really not a concern or are there real risks involved in doing this?

DC like Washington, DC ? ( you're profile says OK City).

This will be my 3rd winter in DC and I rarely went more than a week without riding it.

Or consider renting storage space. Most dealers have heated storage available for a price.

I'm with Don - if you ride it once every couple weeks or so (entirely possible during winter around here) you should be just fine. If you start it, run it long enough (about an hour, at least) to burn all the condensation out of the oils.

If it does have to sit outdoors, get a good outdoor cover - HD's "storm shield" comes to mind - and make sure it's weather resistant and breathable, to vent any moisture that does manage to get through. If you have access to electricity where it's sitting, hook up a battery tender, and if you have a power strip, go to a music store and get a cheap piano dehumidifier rod to put inside the cover as well. Give everything a good coat of S100 (don't wipe it, just let it sit) first, to help keep the aluminum bits from oxidizing. And put the tires on either plywood or carpet, not cement/pavement.

Worst case, send me a note. I live 40min north of DC, and I have garage space next to my Uly : )

Well, I am from Minnesota so let me tell you what I do.

Storage for me is 4 months. Parking is one month or less. For storage I change the engine oil and filter, restarting after the change to circulate clean oil thru the engine. I use Stabil in a nearly full fuel tank and I make sure that the Stabil/gas mixture has been run thru the injectors. I remove the battery and charge it indoors once per month. I wash the bike and wax any surface I am concerned about. I would cover the bike with a breathable cover.

When I bring an engine out of storage, I like to remove the plugs (leave them grounded in the boots), disable the injectors/fuel pump and crank the engine until I have oil pressure. Put it back together and go for a ride.

I don't worry about my tires sitting on concrete or gravel for 4 months.

I'm from Mn also. I do everything above except the StaBil. I prefer Sea Foam.
