Just tape the air inlet over. No sense in over-cooling the oil when its hard enough to warm the engine up. Did mine last winter and will do it again today.

I've been wondering about this. Anyone got a good feel for where the crossover point is? I believe that the optimal oil temp is 180F. I don't have a thermometer to see what it runs when it's cold outside though.

You've got to consider what a large oil cooler the swing-arm oil tank is and the normal oil cooler becomes over-kill in cold weather.

Is the cooler thermostatically controlled?

EG,

Test it out scientilogically; put your gauge in and then run it with and without the oil cooler covered, over the same course, same starting temp, same amount of time on the road, same ambient temp, so forth and so on.

My guess is that it doesn't really matter either way.

Yesterday on the way to work, there was a lady in the car next to me that was bundled up with a huge parka, and gloves thicker than her head. I just laughed and cruised on by visor up : )

i commuted to work part the end of last winter, the coldest day was 17 with a windchill of 3 degs, i guess riding 65mph the windchill would make it even worse. But I never thought twice about my oil temp, didnt notice any difference.. mabye a tad longer to warmup in the morning, and remember being suprised that the fan still operated very close to normal.

Next week im gonna start commuting again...till they lay me off.
