OKC99...you got me thinking... I've been in a really good relationship for the last year - she gets my "motorcycle thing", rides with me occasionally in perfect weather (which is rare), and doesn't question my bike-related purchases. I've been mumbling to her about wanting to take a [solo] trip to Italy, rent a bike, and cross the Alps into Switzerland and Germany, as well as a Spain motorcycle trip. I sometimes keep it local: "Sweetheart, I think I'm going to blast off into West Virginia after work on Friday for a day or two. You know, to see the mountains and the country roads. I'll be back on Sunday if you want to grab dinner." Well, that doesn't always fly. I think I am NEGOTIATING more with this Uly...it's so fricking adventurous that I sometimes have to negotiate and give up my personal time! That counts, doesn't it? | ||

Well, I haven't bought a Uly, but to buy my bike I gave up having a personal car. My wife has a car, I have a bike. My job does supply me a car for work purposes, but I don't have a car of my own. That was actually a pretty big deal because I have been a car nut for as long as I can remember. But, I have never regretted the choice. I used to dream about owning a certain car, but not anymore. I am quite happy to use my wife's car when necessary and ride my bike the rest of the time. | ||

Dyna, I know what you mean 100%. I grew up reading every issue of Car & Driver from the time I was 12yo. I used to fantasize about cars daily. That all stopped in my mid 20s. And now several years later, while in Borders...I can barely muster the excitement to pick up a Motor Trend or Car & Driver. I have lost all ability to fantasize about cars. I have scheduled a visit with my physician.  | ||

Hoop, I disagree. Time in the saddle is by definition = personal time. It's about as personal as it gets since you are with no one else, but your own 'person'. Next summer I am going to ship my bike to Oregon and pretend it's Italy. I'll bring a phrase book to complete the illusion. | ||

I might be able to work with that. I'm totally with you: time in the saddle is PERSONAL, but how do you balance it with your significant other enough so that it's okay for you to disappear for 2-8 days, and sometimes in a "touristically desirable" part of the world? | ||

Sold my ST1100 and passed on the Vee for the Uly. Hoop: Good thinking there. I'm in a long-distance relationship thing that requires me to cross the state of WV every other weekend. Sometimes it is a 2.5 hour drive others a 4.5 hour ride  . We just tried a mini-vacation where she gets to the destination separately and the transit and return are my 'personal' time. In this case it was northern WV to Spartanburg, SC and Nashville and the nice rides in between. Worked out pretty well. As for the solo thing... well a matching time with her I guess .. uhm sorry for the hijack.. back to topic...there's another bike or two in the garage that I hope are collector's items (they are not) as they only seem to be collecting dust. I'm keeping them until the 1125X comes out ....I think it may be easier to sell two to get one ... far as raised eyebrows go. | ||

I took a test ride on a KTM 990 Adventure and thought, "yes, I can live with this"!!! Then I took a ride on an Uly and thought "F*ck!!! I have GOT to have one of these"! I sold my R1150GS straight away! | ||

Sold my 99 ZRX1100 Lawson replica and my 98 Springer to get a new 06 Uly for me and an 03 XB9 for my wife. Should have done it a long time ago! | ||

Kind of backwards, but the Saturn was hurting my back (165,000 miles and still running like a top, but I was no longer the 20 something that could fold himself into it every day). So I sold it and bought a high milage (but in perfect shape) 01 Saab 9-3 turbo for $7000. I have to be able to take kids somewhere, and I have to be able to get to work when it is snowing or raining. Had I not had that budget hit, I don't doubt I would have traded the 9sx in on an XT by now. On the other hand, the 9sx is just doing so much so well in so many ways, even after 25k+ miles, I don't feel like I am missing *that* much. | ||

I traded in my beloved XB9sx for an '08 Xt. It has been a love/hate relationship ever since. 6 months, 11,000 miles, and 2 of those months in the shop. I'm just now getting it back for the 3rd time, I hope it's the charm and the bike runs like I thought it would. I still miss the city-X though...  | ||

Now this is a little backwards, but I left my marriage to keep my Uly. Deciding factors The Uly got ridden more. The Uly doesnt break down every month The Uly costs less The Uly doesnt bi*ch at all I take care of the Uly and the Uly takes care of me. The ex-wife didnt stand a chance up against those odds... And yes this is a true story.  | ||

I gave up my Firebolt to get my Uly. I like the Uly better b/c it is so much more comfortable and versatile but, I do miss the Firebolt. My Firebolt was the most confidence inspiring bike that I have ever rode. | ||

I "gave up" a Cagiva Gran Canyon. I loved the bike but the maintenance with the Ducati engine was high and paying for someone to do it was outrageous. It didn't fit me well and I was ready to get off after a couple of hours. It has the Buell beat in several categories, but comfort, ease of maintenance and fuel mileage were not among them. I bought the Buell first and then when I new I was going to be happy with it I sold the Cagiva. In the Cagiva's defense, it had spot on fuel injection at all times. The transmission was the slickest I've ever shifted. No need for a clutch! It had a rear brake. Great bags and trunk. Both bikes handle great but the Buell will allow more miles of smiles per day! | ||

I gave up an SV650S that I had modified into a nice little sport tourer. Also it's not quite in the spirit of the original question, but I bought the Uly 8 months after buying a new Honda Civic Si. One year later, the Uly has almost as many miles on it as I have put on the Civic in two. I now realize that I overbought on the car and even a sporty sedan with 200 horsepower is not as fun as a do-it-all motorcycle with 100. | ||

Giving up my 03 xb9s for an 08 xt. 2000+ mile trip to nc and the dragon was awesome but hurt to and from. And a backpack just doesn't work for long trips. | ||

Wow! What a beautiful Snortin Norton. I use to drool on those bikes back in high school!! You've just reminded me to get my Triumph Trident off the damn shelf and put it back together!! I mean I took it apart 18 years ago, no sense in getting in a hurry! | ||

Natron, You hit the nail on the head. I test drove lightly used Lexi, various GS and LS models...and said to myself "stereo, A/C, comfy, shiny, decent mileage...my Honda has these things already!". I tried my hardest to desire a new car, but in the end realized I'd never take in on drives for the hell of it. A similar experience happened when I almost bought a Scrambler or a Thruxton. Looked great in magazines, but then saw them in person and my heart didn't thump as hard. I would take one for free however. As an aside, notice how you start trading off accessories in your head. For example: I could either get a new cell phone, stereo, suit or HID lights. Hmmm. I had to wrestle with this decision today. (Message edited by okc99 on November 08, 2008) | ||

Chris - You sound like a fellow Tom Leykis listener (radio DJ out of LA with a pro-male theme based show). The sincerity is much appreciated. He says a full time maid is cheaper than a wife and the results you get never diminish with time. I can't validate it, but I have heard from many married men that he has a strong argument.  | ||

I gave up a pack a day smoking habit. $5 a day That was what justified my first Buell, and I started to pack my lunch. 5 years without a cig! Good luck to sticking with it! I gave up nothing for the Uly, cept for a bunch of money. |
