Hi Folks,

It is that sad time of year when those of us in northern climes prepare their toys for a long winter sleep. So, I ride down to the gas station and top up with premium and add my fuel stabilizer. Ride home and pull the oil plug for an standard oil change. Also pull the filter as well. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, replace with new filter, clean drain plug and replace and start dumping in fresh syn 3. As I near the end of the first quart, oil starts to overflow from the dipstick hole. Holy shite! I then realize that there wasn't a whole hell of alot of used oil in the pan. It would seem something prevented about half of the old oil from draining. Has this happened to any of you guys, any comments would be appreciated.

No, but if you don't loosen the filler cap it can take for ever to drain the oil as it creates a vacuum in the tank that holds it back.

My first guess would be a piece of some sort of debris plugged the drain hole. It could be something as simple as excess thread sealer if the dealer did the last oil change. Pull the plug, poke around with a nail or something and see if the rest comes out.

For all of you that think you have done something stupid in your life, don't worry, I just did you one better! Pulled the primary plug instead of the "swing-arm" plug.
Thanks for the replies anyway!

That's ok. I have "power flushed" the primary by forgetting to put the plug back in before I began filling.

Twice.

In a row. : |

The only thing better than that is that I regularly forget to loosen the pinch bolts before I try the first axle.

I like to leave the filler cap open on Citroen 2CV. Its a flat twin so when both pistons come together at BDC a lot of oil pumps out the filler cap.

Makes a very nice mess ;(

I guess its always good to get fresh oil in the primary as well, gotta go into town to get a liter of Formula now, will get to see if they still have that shiny new XT parked in the showroom! Kinda cool, Moto International in Montreal is a Harley-Buell dealer and a BMW dealer, get to sit on and compare a 800 GS, a 1200 GS and a XT all in the same room....
Thanks for the support, it was about 30 degs, it was raining, my hands were frozen and on a personnel note, we buried my Dad two days before. Probably not the best scenario for even easy maintenance.

sorry to hear about your dad ... I kept myself occupied with mechanical maintenance therapy when my dad left a few years back....riding on the other hand wasn't so good until things cleared up a wee bit... but that was me

Kinda interesting a HD, Buell and BMW shop all in one? Can you imagine the conversations around the waiting room water cooler/latte machine at the service dept?

Thanks for all the kind words guys! I was mainly worried about my Mom, but all went well and the worst is over. If anybody gets to Montreal some time, check it out (also we have the best strip clubs, apparently, I've been told, I wouldn't know........)

We have a HD, Buell and BMW shop near here also. Its in Beaver Dam and is a nice dealership. Not sure how good service or anything like that is but I did stop in to take a peek. Very interesting combination.
