When faced with a decision weather or not to buy a newer car...I just couldn't justify an $18k purchase for what felt like an equally-satisfying experience to my 10 yr old Honda. I thought..."this doesn't feel like $18k of fun, I can't do this!"

It was then that I said "well if I'm going to blow some cash, I want a truly different experience". So I decided to keep a 10 yr old car to get a new bike.

Can anyone relate? What did you "give up" in order to get your Uly.

1200 GS Adventure. Keeping in mind the GS has been my dream bike since their inception. That desire lessons every day I ride the Buell and I just couldn't spend that kind of cash when we had a great USA bike for a hell of a lot less. I wish Buell would step up and make a great Adventure bike. I probably wouldn't trade my Uly bit I would sure try to buy the Adventure Buell.

So I had the money for the GS but bought the Buell. I gave up my dream bike for the unknown US quantity.

I gave up on my dealer after purchase and found a better one does that count?

Otherwise all I really gave up was free time on the weekends and evenings. Uly takes them up now.

For my 06 that I bought used with 6500 miles on it. A 97 Triumph Sprint 900 Executive ( a very underrated sport touring bike) and my Ducati Paso 750 and a couple nights sleep wondering if I did the right thing. It was the most I have ever spent on a bike, It was a tough decision. But I love the Buell. Its a hell of a bike.

I gave up nothing... : ) My wife let me add to the bike stable. Of course it helps having a wife who has her own bike.

I gave up all the extra money Uncle Sam and his taxpayers gave me for sitting in odd countries around the world having a great time. Thanks Uncle Sam and thank you fellow tax payers.

BUY AMERICAN!!
(even if the majority of the parts are outsourced)

Aha...I get it now...

I already had an entry-level cruiser and a sportbike, but they were both underpowered and a bit old so I was ready to upgrade. I was looking for a bagger, actually, and was pretty sure it would be a Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad, which I think look pretty good.

Then I thought - why don't I get something that can be both a sportbike AND a tourer? Once I saw a Buell ad in a magazine then read a review, that was it. The test ride sealed it. I don't foresee any kind of heavy cruiser in my life for some time, unless I hit the jackpot.

Ok, good responses. Does anyone agree with me that weekend bike trips compete on every level with cross-country flight trips?

For Example, one way I justified my purchase was this:

Going to Europe again for 7 days would costs me $2k and it would be over all in one week.

I found the Uly a means to make future vacations less expensive. i.e. a trip 3 hours away in a car would "not be enough" of a getaway for me personally. But when on a bike, it feels like a "full" trip. Therefore, I fulfills the needs of those cross country flight getaways for a fraction of the cost (however, the cost is upfront in the purchase of the bike).

Anyone relate?

I gave up buying a car...which meant that I had to ride the Uly everyday rain or shine (not snow) for a little over a year.

Now that we have a second car in the household, I only ride when I want to...which is still just about everyday!

But the real question is...what did I give up by spending thousands "Maximum-izing" my Uly? Probably taking a real vacation, eating at fancy restaurants, buying new clothes and shoes, and paying for a well manicured front lawn and garden. All worth it!

In the context of which you are asking this question I did not give up anything. The Ulysses is exactly what I was looking for when I bought my '05 City-X. When the Uly came out for '06 I had to have one.

I kept the City-X for a few months to be sure I wouldn't miss it, because I loved that hero blue bike, and having only gone back to ride it once in three months let me have no question I made the right choice.

I gave up going on 17,000 miles on my Harley.

No, I suppose to be accurate, I gave up about 7,000 on the Road King, since I still put about 5,000 on it since buying the Uly, and at least 10,000 of my Uly miles I never would have ridden my Road King on (eg. Moab, UT, Ouray, CO, TinCup, CO, Medicine Bow Mountains, WY, Ulysses, KS).

I also gave up about 3-4,000 miles in a cage at 22mpg riding to work.

Nothing, I'll figure out how to make the payments when the time comes (it's being delivered on 12/12). Or, I'll have to park it at a friends house so the repo-man can't find it.

I get the feeling that although many of us may have been "nervous" when we signed on the dotted line...that since then none of us would have chosen otherwise.

Sequal to this thread will be what would you trade for the Buell?....
You can have it when you pry it from my cold dead hands, and just try and chisel that grin off my face. It is the single most fun bike I have ever had. (even mechanical mishaps aside)

Okc99 I was slightly nervous but I had found this site already and did some researching/lurking/asking noob questions. Was very impressed with most of the people on here that I fealt even if something does go wrong it can be fixed with help. $13k for the bike made me a bit nervous but I would not sell this bike for that now. I like it way too much.

I gave up riding my 66 FLH. I've been riding it for 25+ years. I didn't sacrifice any purchases, but I did give riding a grand old sled.Certainly get a lot of remarks about BOTH of them.
