Lately when I slow down and shift from second into first, as I let out the clutch I get a kind of shuddering in the bike. It feels like things aren't synching right or something. Is there a way to diagnose the problem without taking it to a dealership? Most of my riding is stop-and-go city stuff, so I don't want to keep riding if it's going to completely kill the tranny. But if it's something that I need taken care of, I want to make sure I take care of it.

The bike went out of warranty a month ago - that figures.

Sounds like clutch or tire slippage. Your trans is not going to cause a shudder, you are in gear, or not, but sometimes stuck between.

Adjust your clutch and cable and see if that helps.

Is that something I can find in the shop manual? Is it something that would break the bike if I screw it up? Hopefully not. I'll check it out Sunday I guess.

That shudder might be your front isolator mount.

Check the primary chain also there was a great thread on that recently.

Adjust the cable near the wire form bracket. Be carefull that is how I broke my adjuster. With all the rain I rode in the corrosion was down in the threads. Use some PB blaster or something to loosen the threads before a few days before you start. The good part was while I was adjusting it I found the cable end near the leaver only had 3 cables holding it together. I got it replace before I was dead on the side of the road.

Any one of the three are easy fixes.

BTW Sean I'm PCS'ing to Ft Drum in the spring well have to get a ride in the Catskills next summer.

Thoroughly clean and grease the pivot recess and cable end, install boot, smooth for thousands of miles.

XBimmer that is a nice fix , but mine was crudded up at the adjuster next to the engine. Would not let the adjuster move with out binding the cable. The new cable however was coated in plastic, not like the original. The replacement clutch cable I got was way better than stock 2006.

I just ordered a new cable because mine is only held on by a few threads, haven't gotten it yet but I will be putting on one of those Honda boots. Xbimmer, is that the part number in the first photo? I can get that from a local Japanese dealer?

Yeah that can happen, that's why I lube the threads and zip tie the accordion boot down there.

Yep. If you compare the shots closely you'll see I trimmed off a bit of the tip and a bit off the bottom to clear the clutch switch. Didn't need to trim the tip hence the zip tie. Shoulda test fit the cable first...
