Last year I installed the factory heated grips on my 07, which continue to keep me toasty...sometimes. I've noticed the following: -Both are slower to heat up. -They tend to only want to get hot when the RPMs are up -The right is NEVER as warm as the left, and at times not producing heat at all. -They seem to get hot, then cool almost completely off even when it's still turned on. -And finally, the reason I've let it go so long, sometimes they continue to work flawlessly. So, any thoughts. Are they worn out (I ride year round, and use them often), stator/electrical problem, possessed, etc? I posed a similar question in the past when I began to notice it, but the exorcism suggested apparently did not work. Thanks for any suggestions. | ||

Nope. The only other thing that I occasionally run is a Garmin Nuvi 360, which gets plugged into the accessory outlet, and only for road trips. | ||

My 2008 grips heat up a bit slowly but the heat is balanced well from right and left. I would have thought the throttle side would be hotter because of the plastic tube but they must have figured it out. | ||

Nate, The heat elements on the '08s are in the grip itself, not inside the bar. The plastic tube does not effect the heat transfer. | ||

My 2008 is hotter on the right grip so it seems. Other than that they work great. I never use the hotter setting because it is too hot. | ||

My right grip is hotter too! I take this hand off the bars often to warm my balls!! | ||

I also installed a set of the factory heated grips on my Uly about a year ago. At first the right grip was noticeably warmer than the left. Now the right grip seems to put out almost no heat on the low setting, but on high they both still get ridiculously hot. I guess it's time to get out my DVM and check things out. | ||

The obvious reason for hotter right hand grips is as obvious as mentioned earlier, however it has nothing to do with the right side being "hotter", but rather better insulated from the HUGE heat sink we call handlebars. The left side is mounted right onto this hella heat sink, and as such in truely cooler situations and climates (like my 18 degree trip over sonora a couple weeks ago) is not likely to get as warm because the heat is being soaked away into the bars. I am contemplating removing my left grip and heater, and putting a single layer of heat shrink tubing on the bar itself, then reinstalling the heater and grip over the heat shrink. Just food for thought as I sit here in the middle of a "directed" 20 hour work day on Naval aircraft, for no reason...... Bruce go navy | ||

I would be checking the wiring and ground locations. If you had to run wires through a hole in the bars check for abrasions on the wires there. | ||

Figured it out: Well actually Al Lighton figured it out. After plugging the power supply to the bad grip into the good grip, and finding it still worked, it had to be the bad grip/wiring itself. Since I swear it works sometimes, Al suggested to simulate the throttle position where it tended to work (usually 3/4 throttle, like on a road trip). After securing the throttle partially open, it worked. So, it seems to be a break/disconnect in the ground wire between the grip and the first zip tie (the loop that moves around). Now it's more like "rigged" than "fixed" but getting hot again after I wiggled the loop around and taped it into place once I found the spot. I'm pretty sure that none of that made any sense, but my right hand is hot again. Once this solution proves to be too much of a hassle, I'm switching to Al's grip set up on his website. The left grip is always colder, because you hold the throttle side tighter. Do a test, and ride a couple of miles holding the left grip abnormally tight, and try to loosen your throttle grip a little. I guarantee the left will start feeling warmer. |
