Was out for a short ride around the lake yesterday morning. About 45 minutes into the ride running along at 70 on the highway my '08 XT shut down.
I looked down at the instruments and everything was off. Before I could pull in the clutch to coast to the shoulder everything came back on and the engine restarted.
It made the rest of the ride somewhat unnerving.
Anyone else have something like this happen? If so what should I look for?

One thing is check tightness of battery connections. Sometimes bolts would be slightly too long on earlier Uly's occasionally causing intermittent loss of power; adding washers helps.

When you see smoke coming from the wire harness, don't attempt to repair it yourself. DAMHIK

Tneall,
I had a something similar happen to me. I posted up about it and the codes it threw.

Did you get any check engine lights?

One thing to look at and I don't know if they changed it on the XT, but look under the seat and see if your ECM connectors are rubbing against your seat. This has and will cause Circuit Traces to break in the ECM.

Slowride,

No check engine light. Everything seemed to be operating normally.

I'll pull the seat and check to see if anything is rubbing and check the battery connectors.

As others have said, check the battery connections while your under the seat.

You could also pull the lower fairing off and the front pulley cover. Under the front pulley cover there is a nest of connectors. You need to pull apart and reconnect all of these connectors. I would also put Dialectic grease in each of those connectors as well.

One last possible area to look at under the seat is the BAS in the rear seat area behind the latch on the rear. These BAS can and will go bad, you can ask Ft_bstrd about this.

Similar thing happened to me last week. The battery connections were loose. I tightened them but the check engine light stayed on. Took it to Blue Ridge HD (still under warranty). Let you know what the deal is when I get it back.

Micah, thanks for the Dialectic grease tip. I will do it when I get it back home.

Howdy...

This happened to my '06 awhile back and the advice that you read here (and in other threads) solved the problem. Adding one or two washers to the battery posts might help too - the posts have tended to be too long and "bottom out", causing a short.

I'm trying! I'm trying! I'm adding some lighting soon! (the oil slick and smoke screen eats up a lot of space)

What's that clip for? A heat blanket?

Thanks for the tips on what to look for.
I pulled the seat and sure enough the battery connections took about 1/4 to 1/2 turn each to get tight.
I'm not sure if that is what caused the 'burp' but I put 200 fun miles on it yesterday with no problems and I'll try to do the same today if I have a chance.
Thanks again.
