I knew that was coming... Even if you did something right, they can't have outside influences.

When mine had the smoking harness I had the hardest time not cutting into it to see what the problem was. I plan to fight possible future urges to look into anything until the warranty is expired.

To add insult to injury, the problem has not even been repaired. I was charged $400.00 to replace the 86 plug to bring the wiring back to stock. The intermittent fault in the main harness was never diagnosed.

When I dropped the bike off the service writer told me (his idea not mine)that he would have the technician call me before any work was done because it was an intermittent fault. The tech never got that info so only repaired the obvious problem of the 86 plug being removed.

I have a case number with Buell CR. They called me back saying they would discount the "repair", when I informed them that that only the symptom had been repaired, not the real problem the service rep started to get a little huffy with me. I simply explained that I wanted a case number so that I could follow through when the real problem was diagnosed.

Fortunately the tech at Frederick Buell understood what I was telling him and agreed that there was no way that enough current should be going down that ground wire to burn it up like it was.
They are going to open up the main harness tomorrow and try to find the fault.

When my rear wheel bearings failed 400 miles from home, I locktited in a 6006 bearing from an independent shop that repaired a lot of quads.

I rode home gently, then took my Uly to my local dealer (Downtown H/D-Buell) and they replaced the rear wheel, swing arm, bearings, axle, spacer, and a well worn drive belt, idler pulley, and sprokets.

All covered under warranty.

And you need a new dealer...........

Frederick is a good dealer. I don't know any other good ones that wouldn't be more than 3 hours away.

I agree that Frederick is a good dealer. They bobbled the communications with this one a bit though. The agreement was that the tech would call me before any work was done on the bike, apparently the service writer who suggested this was not the same service writer who assigned the job to the tech so the message was not communicated. The tech has all the info now so hopefully this will end well for me.

Simple mistake it seems. . . . and one that a little communication will surely work out. Even though they proceeded sans expressed authorization, are for comfortable and confident that the work done was needed and reasonably priced.

Even if they did, and it sounds like the facts are correct, screw up my bet is that Frederick will be happy to work it out, own up and take responsibility . . . it's one of the marks of a good dealership.

Interesting read.

I just got a call from Frederick. They say there was nothing wrong found. So apparently they are going to assume that the ground pin in the 86 connector and the wire I put in to replace it burned up for no reason at all. I am going to pick up my bike tomorrow and ride it until it faults again I guess. It seems I am screwed out of $270.00 (Buell discounted it from $400.00) for replacing the 86 plug. When this faults again and leaves me stranded again I am going to be severely pissed.

This situation may suck, but the folks at Frederick Buell are friendly. I picked the bike up today. It is starting and running properly. The wiring harness has obviously been opened up, though they claim they found no fault in the wiring. Their diagnoses was that this was all caused by a loose ground connection, though they found no loose ground connection. I had to pay 280 bucks for the new 86 connector so the job was discounted about 30%. The service writer assured me that it would be all right now because a Certified Buell Technician worked on it and he has the utmost confidence in the technician's training and knowledge. I've put on a happy face and I'm hoping for the best.
