Anyone ever take their bike down NC 151 from the Blue Ridge Parkway down into Hominy Valley?

I was headed back from the AHDRA drag races in Rockingham last Sunday and happened upon this road.

Very steep, tight switchbacks, and corners covered in wet leaves. It quickly showed me that I was out of practice and hadn't worn in the new tires all the way to the edges. A bit scary, but fun.

Just wondering if anyone else had found this particular stretch.

181 is a blast. First time I touched down my pegs was on that road.

Very few of the roads that cross the Parkway are not good.

Hughlysses,

I can see why that would be true. The BRP is at such a high average elevation, and the surrounding valleys are not.

The roads have to get down/up there somehow!

Looks like I need an excuse to head back to North Carolina.

181 south of the BRP is a little different than most. It may be some of the curves are less blind, the 3 lane passing areas or the higher speeds. Bigdaddy sounds like you are close by.

"Bigdaddy sounds like you are close by."

As a matter of fact I am -- not as close as Valdese, but I'm pretty close : ) I rode old 10 to 181 to 221 to Blowing Rock twice this past week. 181 is great and you can normally score the best strawberry rhubarb pie at the top too!

yes, i live one mile from this stretch of road. it is my favorite big grin blast when i need a rush. i was keeping it a secret and now you blew it. now is not the time to try a new time trial, as you said wet leaves are all over the road and you have left of center leaf lookers coming to and from the parkway.

Sorry to point traffic towards your secret TT road, Curly.

I guess that's like posting on a fly fishing board something like "My friend took me to this great hole where the smallest trout was 30 inches. It's easy to get to, you just ...."

I just took a vicarious ride on the loop using google maps and switching to terrain and satellite views. Wow! That'd be worth the trip down to NC someday just for the loop ride.
