Bike is in the shop. Apparently riding the CityX like the ULY has its costs.

New Rear Rotor, brake caliper, pads, rear drive pulley, idler puller, drive gear, rear belt, rear wheel bearings, new rear tire....

Running off road and treating her like a ULY... Priceless

Oy that chain conversion isnt cheap either.
Its 1700 for the swing arm and then anther 900 for the chain kit. ... It will probably end up happening, right about the time I throw a 19 inch spoked knobby on the front and jack the suspension, and relocate the exhaust out from under the bike.... : |

26 k on the bike on 3rd belt, 2 set of bearings, first set of everything else. About 8-9 k of my miles are off road.

What about the cheaper chain kits out there that use the stock swingarm? Like the ones Saintly makes/used to make.

Wheres the point in that? What you need to do is get a decent dirt bike, and throw a pair of Pirelli Diablo Corsa III on them along with a turbo/supercharger : )

Yeah... when the bike is down for maintenance I REALLY wish I had kept my KLR650. Lately I've been thinking of replacing it with a KTM690 or 950SE. A more dirt oriented backup bike you know.

Pick a chain to meet your needs and your set. If you fond a good deal on a chain you can do the swap cheaper than a new belt. The rear swing arm set is way out of the park for off roading anyway. I have to get the chain next week and I'll post the whole build. Didn't know you could spend so much for a freaking chain now days. anything from $120 to $350 crazy prices.

I dont think they ever expected a short legged dirt fiend to get a hold of a City-X and treat it like a ULY or KTM/BMW wannabe. I did trade out the KLR250 & the Ninja 6 to clear the garage for the Buell. It HAS to do both jobs for me. I like not having to go home and change bikes to tackle that forest road you come upon when I am out just putting around.

it is getting apparent that I need a dedicated lightweight small displacement dirt bike, damn shame Buell is out of that market.

It is just a smidge too tall for me. Has the suspension on yours "settled" any?

My Uly was also a little tall when new, but now I can almost flat foot it.

It would be sweet if Buell built a special edition Uly with a more dirt oriented stance/tires.

I wanted to demo one of those, along with the Super Duke. The KTM people wouldn't let me near them because I am only 22. Apparently growing up on dirt bikes and having a 1 piece Aerostitch suit with full protection makes me more of a risk than the guy that crashed the RC8 that weekend! : )

dammnit, KTM builds a nice bike. Though I dont see any benefit of adding the 950 SE to the garage as it would fill the niche that the CityX is already in.... I need the 450 EXC... I also need a date with Tyra Banks, while I am at it dreaming and all. (no budget for the KTM)

It is a tall bike and the suspension has not settled. The suspension will soak up anything you can throw at it though.

Cityslicker the 950 SE overflows the niche that your cityX is already in.

I have an '08 950 SE in addition to my '07 Uly.
Also at 6'2", I can flatfoot the KTM with both feet if I HAVE to, but usually just flatfoot one side or the other.

It is not a 450EXC, but I agree that its niche goes WELL beyond that of a Uly or CityX Uly wanna-be.

I'm sure you know as well as I do that if ya ride hard ya gotta pay. Runnin the shit out of an engine comes to mind... If you choose to use your machine for something that it was not entirely designed for, ya pay then too! I know you got tangled up in the parts availability thing but please don't loose heart. There are many others like me out here in cyberspace wanting to learn just what that model is capable of and where it's limitations are. If I was you, I would be thinking of ways to shroud the belt. I would not be thinking along the lines of a chain conversion (well, maybe) and damned sure not be thinking about a KTM or KLR or some other K-whatever.
I wish you good luck, sir and I hope you just keep thrashin Buells like the rest of us. (or more so).

My inseam is just about 31 inches although I am short apparently my legs aren't, and really want one of those 950se KTM's. Be damned the height. I figure by the time I am used to riding the Uly with the 06 tall seat the KTM, once I can get one, will be a piece of cake. It isn't any taller then the 06 seat on a Uly I hope.

I have sinned-

I broke down the other day and traded the Uly in on a yamaha WR250R.

I LOVED the uly and could see having another some day. I can probably go buy mine back in a year. I think it won't move too quickly from the yami dealer. (A mile down the street from where I bought the uly.)

I still have another street bike so I wanted a dirt bike I could ride on street.
Kind of a big scooter too.

Riding the uly off road was a blast but I was abusing the hell out of it.

The bike never complained though.

I just want to be able to go down a smaller trail and be able to unstick myself if I go to far.

Riding the uly off road made me feel like I was running the Baja 1000, it was a thrill for sure.

One final deciding factor is the fact that I wanted the Uly to help me mellow out on the road.

Wrong choice, bike was too much fun, it always wanted me to do just a little wheelie or stoppie. I found it hard to say no.

Can't afford that in Florida now with our new laws.

If I stretch I can mostly flat foot both sides. There are still some 950SE's out there. It is not in the '09 lineup so unless you can find a leftover at a dealer you will have to look for a used one.

If you are looking go to ktmtalk.com and there is a get a quote button near the top of the page.

Fill out what you are looking for and you will get a quote from a lot of dealers if they have one.

I used it when I bought mine and saved a lot of money off MSRP and they delivered it to my door.

I would have to say the easiest motorcycle buying experience I have ever been involved in.

I really hate to go to the other orange bike maker to get a lighter leaner meaner ride. Buell still has my attention, but when the money comes, if they dont have the bike, then It looks like I am off to send money to the KTM house. The street legal version of this, with knobbies of course.

Before my 950SE I had an '02 520EXC which was plated and street legal. The 450EXC is a great choice. Any '07 EXC and up is 50 state street legal from the factory.

If you go this route head over to ktmtalk to check out mods and things as since these are 50 state bikes you have all emissions stuff we are stick with in California (cats, charcoal canister, etc.)

I got the bike out of the shop, after a full month of being down and over a grand in parts, labor and repairs.....
Dirt never felt so good. there was a fresh rainstorm and the mountain trail was just beggin to be christened. Damn lil beast loves the dirt, I dont know how I can ever keep this as just a street bike.
The more aggressive stuff will warrant a purpose built bike.... Come'on Buell... build it, they will come...
