There seemed to be a few of us that are having trouble with the stock bags on the XT leaking in rain.Anyone had any luck getting this fixed at their dealers? So far mine is looking into it. Judging by the time it takes it must be a very very complex issue. : (

I asked this very question recently. Seems those of us who have leaking bags are just living with it.

I drilled holes in mine to put bungie helpers on, and while I know they aren't causing the leak (I had it before I put them on), I have serious doubts about Buell/HD not saying that my holes are where they leak.

I got 1/2 of my problem fixed. While my dealer has been great, Buell is the problem. Buell replaced the seal on one bag that was leaking, but refuses to replace on the little black cords that prevents the side bag from opening in more than a 90 degree angle.

Just curious...does that mean you broke a retaining strap, and need it replaced? Or, you want your bags to open further than the designed 90 degrees?

If it's broken, it may just be a matter of finding a part number. I don't recall - been a while since I've been at work - if the strap is on the service parts list or if one has to source it from Hepco-Becker directly.

Hey Joe - The restraining strap. When I spoke with Nate he said Buell was giving him a hard time about replacing the damn thing, which can't cost more than $1.50. Supposedly its on the way...

DJM, has the seal fixed the leaking issue with you? From what I remember of the other thread on this issue, a few people didn't think the seal was the problem.

My dealer has been “looking into it” for a while now so today I got the bright idea to call Buell Customer Service. I waited on hold for over 30 minutes to be told that because I’m in Canada I have to call the Canadian distributer Deeley Imports. She was kind enough to give me the number. The number she gave me put me through to Angelo, who was surprised that a customer was given his phone number as he “doesn’t deal with customers”. So Angelo tells me he’s going to call the manager who deals with my dealer so he can call the dealer and see what’s happening. When I pointed out that allegedly my dealer had been phoning them to see what they are going to do to fix it I was told to just call my dealer in a few days and I should only be talking to my dealer.

Some how from reading other posts about Buell CS I expected more. I guess I’ll wait some more and see what happens.

Wayne - I haven't tested it yet. I'll try it this weekend when I wash my bike and let you know.

The service department at my dealer found little hunks of broken plastic, like sprues from a casting, that were crimping the seal in one spot. Weird, especially since I hadn't noticed them myself. It's raining buckets right now, so I'll soon have a chance to find out if the left bag is dry now or not.

Well, it's considerably better. Instead of a cup of water there's maybe a tablespoon or two. Mind you, it's been drive-you-off-the-road-to-seek-shelter-type rain off-and-on over the past 24 hours. I'm guessing that those little plastic bits must have chewed up the seal a little in one spot, hence the slight leak now. The dealership says they'll order a new seal under warranty, which will hopefully fix the leak totally.

I think tomorrow I'll go examine the seals on mine more closely. Glad to see your almost fixed up Drifter

Old Glory HD told me to 'keep an eye' on the boards.. Seems a few of us with XTs are having similar leak issues (with side bags only!)

Personally, I think it's a manuf. defect with the seals. The top case is fine, side cases have a funky design. On trips that I know I'll encounter rain, I use DrySeal bags for my stuff. Laptops don't do well with a garbage bag... =)

For me it defeats the purpose of having "built in" bags if you have to pack everything in garbage bags to stay dry. If Buell can't come up with a solution for me I'll most likely replace the bags with something better.....or just take them off and make the next bike I buy a "real" touring bike and save the uly for running around.

Are we talking about the black bags or the other ones ? I just ordered a Uly X with the black ones. Should I cancel the bags and go aftermarket ?
