So after 10,000 miles my low beam headlight went out (could have been the 50 miles of dirt roads I did yesterday with my wife on the back - potholes can be a bitch 2 up.) Little too earlier here for a color tour here in the thumb of Michigan, but we had a go at it anyhow. Anyways, I changed it out without incident and it was pretty straight forward (I went with a Sylvania Silverstar H7...Not as bright as you guys with HID "sunbeams" but nonetheless I was impressed with it.) I had the whole housing off and replaced one side, lubed up both High/Low sides with dielectric grease and then discovered the center Grey connection. Right between both headlights there is a Grey electrical connection that takes a 2 prong horizontal plug if I recall. My question is what the hell is THAT for? My second question is am I missing something that should be plugged in there? I put some dielectric in there to help avoid a short and buttoned everything back up...

They make a bulb for it that is 7 color, rotating LED. The only time you can see it if it's pretty dark out and the switch is in park position. I call it "mood lighting".

So why not slap a white bulb in there and get the most light you can out of the reflector housings?

I've got a daylight-white bulb in there. It's a wedge base, they don't make a lot of light. With either headlight on, you can barely tell the position lamp is on - it doesn't even throw enough light to illuminate the off-light reflector.

Lots of folks use this connector as the power outlet for their HID ballast, as it does not "wink off" when you toggle the starter like the regular hi/lo beam sockets.

Thanks for the info everyone! Ratbuell, could you tell me the number for the bulb you put in there? I think I'll go with the wedge base white bulb... the rotating LED one sounds nice, but if I parked the Uly in the bedroom some evening for "mood lighting" my wife would surely shit! : )

I think the bulb number is 194; it's a small bulb with a wedge shaped base. They come in colors, too. I put a blue one in mine-looks cool at night when you park it and there's a blue glow at the front of the bike/red at the back. It is activated when you turn your ignition switch to "park" which IIRC is past "Lock".

I have the European specced bike. The 'parking' light is continuously on except when bike is switched off in the 'normal steerlock' position. If you turn the key a bit further it acts as a parking light as described above.

Redshiftquasars - (like the name BTW) No, my check engine light did not come on. I found it during my "pre-flight" check done daily before throwing a leg over the saddle the next day. Quick trip to Wallyworld during daylight hours with the high beam on and all was well...

I do believe it is a 194, if you want to add color to the front of the bike. AutoStoned has tons of colored 194s these days, folks love to change the color of their dashboards/gauges : )
