I went to knowledge vault and didn't find any real good current info. Now that the Pilot Road 2's have been out and on Uly's for awhile, what is the verdict? Mileage handling etc. Presently have scorpions on and was considering stradas, but most interested in PR2's. | ||

There really should be a tire spread sheet somewhere. Something that you could rate the tire for grip, life, off road performance and cost. something done by riders away from the corporate glitzy press ads. I am on to my next set for winter riding. | ||

I've settled on two sets of tires now. The Distenzia's for the knarly stuff, and the Roadtech z6's for pounding pavement. Current Roadtechs still have plenty of tire left after 5000 plus, the last rear went 7500+, still had tire in the front, but changed them out as a set anyway. | ||

In all the shootouts the Dunlop Roadsmarts finished right behind the PR2's but everywhere i searched the PR2's were $40-50 more expensive. I went with the roadsmarts and am happy so far. | ||

Love the pilot powers on my Jap Bike, so I'd bet the pilot roads are excellent too. But I am really happy with the syncs for the uly. I do go off road though. | ||

The PR2's have been my favorite tire so far. I will be utilizing them exclusively from now on. The grip was fantastic. I loved the profile. The tire wear was good (for me). I got 4,000 miles out of the rear. Normal mortals should get 6-8,000 miles. The wet traction was excellent. I have utilized: D616's Avon Azaro's Avon Storm's Strada's PR2's. (and a brief stint with a Tomahawk) The PR2's are a little more expensive, but I feel that they deliver on every extra penny. | ||

I'm going to maybe fly in the conventional thinking here. I've had a set of PR2's and whilst they were a good tyre, I never got the feeling that they were a great tyre. Here's my history: 21,000 miles since last April. 1st set were those rather awful OE 616's. 2nd was a set of PR2's. Seemed good, but had to change them after they were about half worn due to getting a nail in the rear. 3rd set was Bridgestone 021's. Great tyre for grip and handling in all conditions, but lousy wear - 3,500 from the rear. 4th set were another set of PR2's. Again, they felt ok but never really inspired huge confidence like the 021's. Wear was about 5,000 from the rear. 5th set, just put on a new set of 021's. Whilst the mileage is crap the confidence I get from them is worth the cost. I've yet to try Pirelli's or any other brand, I may yet do so but they'll have to be pretty special to get me off the Bridgestones. | ||

I HATED the Pirelli Strada's. I HATED the profile most. They never felt planted or secure. I always felt that they were going to break traction at any moment. Never tried the BT021's. There are so many selections that you could spend your entire life looking for the "perfect tire" and never find it. Once you do find it, they discontinue it.  | ||

I use the PR2's and they work great. I get around 6-8 with the rear. I have 4 on the front but that is the first one I put on, still in good shape. As FB said the traction in rain is great. Ran 300miles in rain and did not have any issues. | ||

The idea of a data spread sheet sounds great in theory. However, (IMO) tire evaluation is too subjective, with too many variables. With that said: I think the stock 616's were great tires except for only lasting 5600 miles. Because of such dismal mileage and price, they are not on my list for replacement tires. The Distinsia have a tendancy to wash out on shale/peagravel/gravel roads at speeds of 45-52mph. It is not confidence inspiring. I prefer redheads, asians, and lithe Russians. | ||

I think I'll try some PR2's next. My last set was Avon Storms. I got about 6k out of each rear tire, and 10k out of the front tire. I liked the handling, but I think they have problems in their manufacturing process. I had a front end wobble only in left turns for several thousand miles. Right now I have Continental Road Attacks. They seem to grip alright, but I don't like the profile. It's too steep on the back, and it isn't linear. When leaning over into a slower turn, it's very steady for a moment and then falls in suddenly. It always feels like the back end slid. | ||

I ran the Scorpion Syncs on my City-X and the Uly and loved them. The last two rears I became skeptical as to their manufacturing larger quantities and keeping their quality. I switched to the Pilot Road II's and will not be going back. I consistently got 6000 miles out of 6 rear Syncs on two bikes. I have now got 5000 on this Road II and it is at about half tread and I feel they are equal in many ways to the Sync's best characteristics and better in two. The tread wear has been for me superior, I'm looking at at least 8000 miles out of it. And it is a confidence inspiring tire for cornering. I have found that where I was leaning off the bike and working it with the Sync, I can ride easier and lean less to do the same speed on the same corner. I agree with Ftbstrd in that it is in the contour and the dual compound. It does work and I like them. | ||

Tires are cheaper to mount. Strangely the mounting may require non-petroleum lube. | ||

I have the Road Pilot 2s with 9k miles on my first set. I can't tell any major wear! I love them. They perform well and wear well. | ||

I've worn out a few sets of tires. 2 set D616's, Not to shabby off road second rear was on sale. AVG 7000 miles on thr rear. I tossed the front at around 14,00 miles do to this odd shimmy that someone else has mentioned somewhere. I'm sure it will come to me. MT90's Great off road and in the rain but only lasted 3600 miles on the road best rain tire I ever mounted. To steep of a price for the resulting tire performance. The were sticky!!! 2 sets of Distanzas. Pretty much the best all round tire for the all round motorcycle. The tire matchs the ULY's abilities 70% on road 30% off road. Each rear lasted around 7000 miles. I tended to like the off road ablities, but I don't spend as much time off road as CITY. On the road these were the most fun in the twisties. I wouldn't have thunk it but man did they love the Dragon!!! Full load in the bags and I was the Ahole passing guys on the out side. Fun all round tire. I just wore out a set of Roadsmarts. If you do LD rides or commute allot this would be my tire of choice. The dual compound worked as advertised. I did a 2 week 7500 mile trip on these tires. I didn't go off road at all for 10000 miles. The trip varied from 100 degree heat to riding in the snow to I40 across the southwest slab to running the skyway, parkway, dragon, cherohala, GA60, many Suches area roads. This tire kicked it in the mountains and the hard center let me ride long and hard to get to the twisties. Dunlop did me good after using up crappy 616's. Cost to mile to thrill ratio I'm digging these tires the most. Finally, I just mounted a set of of Storms. I hope to get the same results I did from the Roadsmarts. I'll keep a track of the Storms performance. I just moved to all year riding in AZ so another 10,000 miles might take me till Thanksgiving. Come to think of it I really havn't hated a tire yet because I was to busy riding the hell out of my Uly. The Uly makes up for short coming of some tires I think. |
