53k and my beloved 06 left me pushing this morning. Got a mile and a half away from home, accelerating up the onramp and it just died. Still had lights, but no neutral, check engine, low fuel, etc. and wouldn't crank. 15a ignition fuse blown as did the replacement. Pushed it home and installed a 15a circuit breaker to begin diagnosis and the 30a battery fuse promptly blew. Figured the VR and/or stator at fault so unplugged them and breaker still tripping. Had already inspected harness for known chafe points- everything looked good.
Unplugged fuel pump and breakers didn't trip. Found you don't have to remove the swingarm to get the pump out (others have posted the same) but it's close. One of the pump wires and the low fuel sender wire had chafed against the pump bracket. Sleeved and re-routed the wires, reassembled and it's good as new again!

Chaffed fuel pump wires.

Who woulda thunk it.

+1 on good trouble shooting Paul.

By the way- the "77" connector for the stator as well as the VR connector were both cherry. No evidence of heat or corrosion. I rarely "wash" the bike- just wipe it off with a damp cloth. The only time it gets all wet is when it rains! (That's what killed the wheel bearings)
