After using the Buell tall windshield for over a year and 11K+ miles, I'd finally had enough of the retina-detaching helmet buffeting. A search of past posts revealed two approaches: various large or even BAW's, maybe with special brackets to create a quiet pocket or go short to get the helmet into a clean airstream. I'm not a fan of BAW's so I decided to go short. The stock short windshield allows a lot of drag on my upper arms so I decided to chop the tall windshield (it's my trash anyway) and take advantage of its wider lower end. I know others have purchased the laminar lip product to achieve similar goals but I couldn't find anyone who bought a tall and then shortened it. (there's a joke-on-me in there somewhere ) Here's what I did.

Overlay the shields and layout a cut line on white tape.

So how's it perform? After a few hundred miles I like it a lot. Helmet buffeting is dramatically reduced from the tall and there's less wind on the upper arm and shoulder than with the stock. I'm 5-10 using the '06 low seat. Sharp eyes will notice I was evaluating it with the '06 stock seat at photo time. I can still get cleaner air if I raise myself slightly in the low seat so I'm considering shaving it down a 1/4" and reevaluating. Another thing I notice now is that the tall windshield is felt in the steering more than the little windshields. So maybe Buell could offer a Ulysses Street Glide windshield?

Nice job! What did you use to do the cutting?

Did the same thing with my tall windshield. Best mod I ever made to the bike. It made a huge reduction in the helmet noise and buffeting.

That looks really good. Maybe I'll have to start looking for a tall windshield to cut down. I'm not real happy with my stock one. In fact, I've been toying with the idea of going without a windshield at all. You may have just changed my mind.

I'm 6'4" and also have a cut-down tall windshield, although I didn't cut it nearly as far as the pics above. I simply took off the lip at the top, also using the top edge of the stocker as a guide for the 'line'.

Oh...dremel tools rock for cutting plexi : )

What is that knob in the second to last pic above the keys?

For the cut I used an orbital jigsaw with a wood blade and a small amount of orbit. The blade was maybe 12-14 TPI. It went through the windshield cleanly without melting it or jamming like a finer blade might. The knob is a variable heat control for my grips. It connects to a pulse width modulator under the fairing. You're right Froggy, that sounds like it oughta make the bike go faster! Thanks for all the comments

Seems like a long ways to reach. I am short though.

Now you need to convert that to a for a front pointing pulse weapon to disarm, all stupid cagers!

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I bought my used 06 with the tall shield and low seat already in place. I can't say I like the tall shield very much. I've been thinking about getting a stock shield, but will give the cut down a try first.

Bob - Do you still have the stock seat?

Rubysdaddy,
Yes, I have the stock seat. Just wrapped it back into storage. I doubt I'll ever use it again. You interested? It's definitely plush but its height puts me on tip-toes at stop lights. I also noticed I slide back on quick launches (that is, ALL launches) more than with the low. So I guess with the stock seat I felt like I'm on top of the bike rather than part of it. But since I must grudgingly admit that I'm little more than a jockey by comparison with the average Uly demographic, a 6'-2", 230 pound, thick-necked, barrel-chested, pistol-packing, ex-mil, YMMV
